2011 Fall Hoosier National Forest Ride OCT. 15-16

This will be the 5th anniversary of alpiv and RoadDad's idea of a ride through the Hoosier and back.

For reference the route this year will be pretty long (200 miles per day) starting in Martinsville at Indy's Restaurant with a proposed start time of 9 AM and ending up on Saturday evening in Tell City, IN with the route returning to the starting point on Sunday.

Downloadable GPS routes will be available to guide you. These, along with other information, will be available on this thread so stay tuned!!

If you want a taste of what's happened on the last four rides go to page 3, post #38 and enjoy the madness.

ATTENTION NEWBIES: A primer for this ride for those who might be new to this game is located at posts #394-396. Downloadable GPS routes are coming.

I hear you. At this point in life I'm just happy to wake up, breath and able to wiggle my toes. Anything beyond that is gravy.

I might have asked this on the Indiana Ride Thread but besides the proposed dates how does everyone feel about a long day in the saddle? If we start in Martinsville and use the route I have in mind it's going to be a long day headed south. Sunday MIGHT be a bit shorter but that all depends on what evil Jerry-San has in his mind.

I'll get out and do a pre-ride to come up with a mileage figure soon.

I've got to work that weekend, but given enough notice, I should be able to snag some vacation days for it.

Would there be an issue going the weekend of the 15th instead of so late in the month?

Those two weeks earlier may be ride savers. Unless the idea is to either have the leaves turning and/or falling off by the time we go.

I like the 15th

I'd like to go this year, so for what it's worth the 15th is much better for me than the 29th.

WoodsRat, I can hardly wait to ride.....

with the group in Indiana again. It was also an educational experience for me...for while listening to you Hoosier guys spinning yarns about riding, I learned to say catty-wumpus and kitty-corner.
Wish we didn't have to wait until the Fall season.

Mid-October is the peak season for color and my only concern might be traffic on IN 46. I've seen it bumper-to-bumper with leaf maggots all the way from Nashville to I-65. If we started at 9 AM in Martinsville on the route I have in mind we could be south of IN 46 within an hour and a half. How would the traffic be at that time of day? No clue. If it's heavy making the required left turns for the short runs down this road might be difficult.

Tim,
You post this thread on the 'Indiana ride' thread? I just stumbled across this.

Count me in if it happens to fall on that first weekend. Have been hearing about this ride for awhile now and how much fun I have been missing. Until now I didn't have anything but the FZ-1 to ride... and it's not that big on gravel/off-road. Am having an absolute blast getting back to my "roots" aboard the plated XR400 now though and I'm looking forward to coming to this year's ride with you guys.

WHATEVER!!!
I'll try to keep a better eye on it this year.
I believe Amy will be attending as well so we might have to pick up the pace a little.....
