BSA B44 Riders? Builders?

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if there are folks around who build and/or ride BSA singles, and if so, where are they posting?

I guess the bikes are actually getting elderly, but a good B44 will still leave some bikes in their dust.....if the bikes are G80 Matchlesses......

I like the B44's because they are stone-age simple, light, and easy to work on, and once carefully fettled, easy to start. My favorite B44 is a 1967 B44VE round-barrel, with a Monobloc on the old-style head. (I once built a B44 with a round barrel and a square head, just because it reminded me of a Velocette....)

Anyway, attached is Gemini, a B44 cafe bike, along with my friend Terry's Enfield---two great singles!

I've owned few B44s.... also B25/TR250's & a hand full of A65's.. My first bike was an Enfield in '68 & pretty much had Brit bikes up until a few years ago ( and Bultaco too). I swore off right side shifters about 5 years ago & sold off the lot... I have some photos, but don't have pix of all. Here's a couple:

and one B50

here's a bunch or really good guys:

I built this B44 based hybrid back in the early '80s. It was a highly modified '67 round barrel in a '77 RM370 frame with updated RM suspension.

I rode it for while, then progressed to other bikes and let it sit for about 15 years then decided to rebuild it and make a few improvements. I finished the rebuild (when that photo was taken) and rode it for a bit. I finally decided the 4 speed gearbox was too limiting for the dual sport riding I wanted to do with it. I ended up buying my DRZ400-S and several years later sold the bike.

It is basically a pretty solid motor but they run HOT, at least the round barrels do, and mine was far from stock. They live up to the "thumper" tradition and shake pretty hard at certain rpms. I had mine balanced and it was smooth up to about 4k rpm then shook pretty good. I suppose I could have had it balance for smoother up top then have it shake at lower rpms.

Mine started pretty well as long as the plug was clean. I had the boyer ignition and later alternator with the capacitor battery eliminator. I think it would have been less sensitive to plug condition using a battery.

If I ever did another BSA unit single bike I will use the B50 engine, it's definitely a little better.

same tranny though... shifter plate was changed in '68, but still had a weak 2nd gear. Also, the B50 kicker gear is different & will not work in other unit singles without changing the ratchet too. Otherwise.... pretty much all the same.

PS.... nice bike. the second pic I posted is a square barrel in a Kawi 350 frame, done up as a bobber.... I have other pix somewhere. I also put a B44 into a Triumph TR25 frame (that was a re-badged B25 anyway).

There was a B44 in the Phoenix Craig's List a day or so ago for $1300. I don't know if it is still there.

B44

Since you guys are selling storys...
I was in the motorcycle recycle shop and there was a victor GP some one had dropped off.
Like how you give old clothes to the good will...
It leaked a bit there on their floor and sported a tag of $2,400.
