It was near 80 degrees and trail had tons of mud and wash outs to get some learning in on the new bike. Best parts was when I went off trail and straight into the woods. Really find the Husky does much better in that rding then the DRZ did. Heading to Pipestem Easter weekend if anyone wants to give these routes another try in hopefully warmer weather.
Tom,

You missed some great muddy double-track! That new husky would have been "squealling" with delight!

Looks like a grand time! Thanks.
I am stoked beyond normal stoke for riding in VA/WV. 5 day countdown has begun. :)

Twvt-NC T2

We continued on NC-T2 ascending elevation up and over a couple ridges and hollows, with snow on the ground and road. Fortunately the temps stayed in the mid 30s and we did not encounter any ice-which was my concern. Navigating through the snow went fine, with slower speeds, but no ice spots- doable and enjoyable! Riding in the snow was quite beautiful!

Photos from Jeff at a stop for "snow" pictures.

Continuing north on Twvt-NC T2, we left the gravel, then some asphalt, then back to gravel, then time for a short break.

Twvt-NC T2

We followed Twvt-NC T2 and came to WV-CR33 and made a left.

Nice twisty asphalt through sleepy coal communities. Coal industry throughout this part of WV.

We were just cruising through the twisty's and then as we were exiting Coal City, we were welcomed with a blue light special from the local constable. He pulled in front of me, the lead rider and blocked our lane. Stopped for 37 in 25 mph posted speed. After requesting consideration for a warning, Mr. Constable said he had to charge the lead rider with speeding, and asked for my driver's license, owner's card and insurance card. As I started to unzip my tank bag, I remembered I had a handgun on top of my documents and alerted Mr. Constable to the fact and that I had a concealed weapon permit and requested his permission to retrieve everything. After reviewing the 4 documents and learning all were legitimate, I guess he realized I was not an illegal dirt bike rider, and changed his mind and gave me a verbal warning. I offered for him to look over my emergency bear gun-Taurus Casull 454, and after I removed the loaded cannon from the holster, he sighted it at the ground. I am sure the other riders behind me were wondering "what the hell is going on"?

Mr. Constable invited us back to WV, but next time to honor the 25 mph speed limit.

Mr. Constable earned my respect!

Twvt-NC T2-Alt 1

Next a left onto Twvt-NC T2-Alt 1 and we were on gravel, and then some super double track. A definite fun DS section of riding!

This stretch looped us back to NC T2, where we made a right and rode back to T2, and continued on gravel roads.

Twvt T2

Our original plan was to ride Twvt T2 until we reached Wolf Pen. Then ride Twvt T2 ALT1 south and loop back toward Princeton. Along our ride we came across active mining activities. Two us were running low on gas, so our plan changed.

Where are going next???

We continued to ponder our next route to gas...

Coal slop-sludge. Better wet than dry and dusty!

We were getting a little muddy and coaly....

Coal truck tonka style!

This section of T2 travels through a working mine, as well as intersects the Hatfield-McCoy trail system. We saw many ATVs riding the trails, with riders and ATVs wearing a light coat of mud!

Twvt

After talking with an ATV rider, we decided to take a local side trail to the closest gas location in Maitland, on US52. Our plan was to refuel and then get back on our return loop.

Well this local stretch was fresh with rain and slipperier than snot! My WR with the original OEM Trailwing (deathwing) front tire, refused to stick, and refused to track! Would have helped if I lowered the pressure and did later... The Michelin T63 also lacked traction, and this section really called for all out dirt tires.

The other 4 riders seemed to manage the mud better than me. I guess I need to attend mud riding school!

So we slid our way through the mud and refueled.

Then en-route to connect with our return loop, the KTM lost a bolt, resulting in wearing a hole in the auxillary tank while rubbing on the rear tire.

So with a leaking gas tank, we decided to head for the Microtel and slabbed it back to Princeton.
