GSPD brake pads and general questions...
Hello all-
1993 r100gs/pd . Mine is all beat up, I feel like it's leaking everywhere. Bough it with 80k, now 90k.... I have some basic questions....I would love the advice... Are there inexpensive pad replacements, where's the best place tp buy those? Where's the best place to order oem parts? Leaking where speedo cable enters trans....?..what does that mean? Push rod seals, look like there are they leaking...how often does that have to be done, hard to do? My carburetors seems like they are leaking too, oily and leaky looking....? Thanks for any info and help on how to get this bike back to reliable.....

Brake pads first, I prefer Galfer Greens and buy mine from cyclebrakes.com who offers a ADVR 10% discount.. they will also make a custom SS line for the front if you like.

Stainless brake line and Change the caliper to a 4 pot Brembo then you get better brakes worth doing. Poke around my G/S link for how to machine the caliper. 2nd on Galfer green Pads, got mine from Happy Trails.
Get another rubber speedo boot for the tranny and fill it w/ grease. Not sure if it has on o-ring. look at Max BMW to see if there is one.

Leaking speedo cable at trans could be a worn speedo cable screw - check the threads, and if worn, buy a new screw with washer. PO might have over tightened it, which stretches the threads in the trans housing creating the leak. You only need to tighten until snug. Push-rod seals only need to be done when they start leaking or when you have the heads off. If you know how to disassemble and reassemble heads, no sweat otherwise consider an airhead shop. Both carburetors are leaking oil? Do you have the correct amount of oil or too much? The crankcase vents to the carbs via the junction in the airbox. Either the carbs have not been cleaned in a while, have bad gaskets/seals, too much oil in the sump, or combination of the three. Good luck! |

I just installed a new Speigler SS brake line on my '91 GS, well made and perfect fit. No other mods, and the difference is,,,,,,,,incredible!!! Best $59 bucks I've spent on this thing.

I sometimes buy from chicago bmw, but when in Reno I mostly buy from Sierra BMW. Their service and parts guys are good, they stock a good selection of airhead parts, and if you need to order something they can usually get it the next day! I'd be suprised if they don't have everything you need to do the push rod tube seals on the shelf. Their prices aren't so bad either, Scott the service manager is an encyclopedia and has helped me diagnose problems when travelling over the phone, and the parts guys will ship you parts when you break down in Timbucktoo.
I usually start on the RealOEM website (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...8&mospid=51689) to figure out the parts numbers and then call them.

Re: speedo cable leak....
Not sure if the R100 GS uses the same hollow bolt as earlier 5-speed boxes, and I know paralever models have a different seal/vent arrangement at the output shaft. But if it is supposed to use the same hollow bolt to vent the box check to make sure the bolt that holds the speedo cable in the transmission has a small hole through it and that it is not plugged up. If someone has replaced that bolt with a solid one or its plugged with dirt or sludge, the transmission would try to vent up through the cable boot as the gear oil warms and expands while riding.

I bought a "custom line" off of eBay a few years ago and it leaked at the fitting... it took 15+ emails to get a refund from the seller... for the extra $15 or so bucks getting a custom Galfer from CycleBrakes is my choice now...
