690 Enduro tires

I have a 690 enduro r and its about time for new tires, what are some good suggestions on a good tire. Thanks

Dunlop D606 on front Dunlop 908RR on rear if you're dual sporting. D606 on rear is okay but plan on replacing it every 400 miles.

I've run the Michelin Desert and Michelin Baja and they seem to work so so... slippery on pavement.

The Tractionator H/T has good traction on dirt but I had the rear side wall split at about 200 miles. That killed this tire for me.

My 690 chewed and spit out Pirelli MT21's in under 300 miles. Rides great on pavement, is horrible in rocks and hard pack dirt.

What kind of riding are you doing mostly?

I mostly ride on the road but also in the woods so I need a good road tire but aggressive enough to handle the dirt

I'm running an MT90 right now. Pretty good on the street and okay on dirt as long as it's not muddy. Another option is the Metzler Saharas. I was looking at getting the mefo explorers for my next tire.

kenda trakmaster II's are cheap and work great for woods riding. i got about 1200 miles out of the rear on my 690. The bonus is the tires dont cost much.

I'll be doing the TAT this summer on my 690R. The bike is ripping through the MT21 rear that came with the bike, so I'm leaning towards something else for the TAT. I'm considering:

Dunlop T63 - very cost effective, fairly aggressive tread pattern. seems to get decent reviews ~$65

Heidenau K60 - used this on my 800GS on the CDR last summer and I was very impressive with the traction vs. tread life balance. I've put 11K miles on it and it's still going. About 2.5-3 times more expensive than the T63, however. The least aggressive tread pattern of the tires I'm considering. ~$150

Dunlop D908RR - gets great reviews and is more geared towards larger displacement dual sport bikes. It's also the most expensive of the bunch. ~$200

Thoughts?

I had amazing success with a Dunlop 908RR on the rear of the 690R. It works well on the 990R as well, but it lasts much longer on the 690. I highly recommend this tire.

I bought a set of Micheline Desert's and really liked their cornering ability. You can rail hard with this tire in rocks and sand.

Michelin T63's are pretty good. Not so great in mud or sand.

Most of these tires are speed and weight rated so your performance will vary based on riding skill, weight you're carrying, etc.

Don't waste your time with the TAT. It's a bunch of long dirt roads with few technical sections and it doesn't get interesting until Colorado. There is better scenery and rides on some of the tracks you can get off of here.

Thanks for the info on the 908's. What kind of mileage did you get out of them?

I'll be doing the western half of the TAT - CO to OR. The eastern half seems a bit boring and I don't have enough time to do the whole thing.

I personally don't buy tires based on how long they last. This depends on many factors, like how hard you twist being at the top. I get 1200+ miles out of a rear 908 on the 690. When I rode Baja I got over 1800 miles on a single rear. I always plan on changing tires at some point unless I'm riding pavement.

If you're looking for longevity, I saw first hand a 690R with the MEFO Super Explorer and Explorer with over 2500 miles on one set. They probably are not the best off-road tire, but for a long dual sport ride they probably are good. I doubt they do well in mud or sand.

Everything is a trade off.

I agree there are trade offs with any tire. I don't make my decision based on any single factor. Cost, performance, tread life all factor in. I wouldn't buy a $300 tire that only lasts 200 miles regardless of how well it grips, for example.
