640 Adv and Happy Trails bags

What size?
I am thinking Tetons with the canyon cut
The narrow 7.5" for the exhaust side and the 9.5 or 10.5 for the other side

They say that the capacity is 33.19, 39.82, 46.46 liters each

My idea is to sell the Jesse's on the GS to help pay for the HT bags. Not to mention I dont need TWO sets of bags.

What size are you running on your 640?

Well I measured my Jesse's
they were aboot the same size if you didnt count the top lid

So if I went with the tetons
Large and small which is 10x15x18 and 7.5x15x18 i will have almost the capacity of the Jesse's minus the lids

Do you guys think this will be too big for the 640?

It all depends on how much weight you plan on carrying with the sidecases.

My LC4 Adv. with Happy Trails from two years ago:



With the cases loaded up to 60-90lb. of camping gear, the bike is quite a handful to maneuver on pavement or trails.

I decided to go to a Pelican case as topbox instead, and keep the bike more nimble and able to squeeze through traffic.

looks like you got the big ones
talked to the guy at HT and he said id have to move the mounts on the bags to switch bikes and i dont want to do that
i guess i will just get the Tetons size in the 7.5 and 9 inch width (if the rack is asymetrical due to the exhaust) or two 9 inch wide guys

Do you think I can spray paint the insides rather than poping ($90) for the powdercoat?

The Happy Trails site says that their "SU bracket" (pannier mounting brackets) require the passenger footpeg brackets in order to bolt on correctly. I'm wondering if it would be possible to fab some kind of spacer to work with the SU bracket if you want to strip the passenger peg brackets off your bike but still rig the side cases?

Anyone have any direct knowledge or insight into this?

They look like really nice side cases.

check out passmore's bedliner thread; somethin about a cheap rattle can substitute that might work for inside the boxes.

BTW, does your riding involve crashin' alot? if it does you might want to consider Pelicans - many threads on this if you search. they are likely the best solution for longevity on a DS.

they seem a little heavy tho

So Cases4less has the 1550 for 86.50 and the 1600 for 98.25That is a whole lot cheaper than any Alum box.....

and when you go down they are way more likely to hold together than any commercially available pannier known to me.

in fact they are so sturdy that we (find those threads?) have been worried that if they catch on something it could tear the rack or the bike up! So we are considering ways to design in a "break away" mount so that w/ sufficient force the bag will separate in an attempt to protect the rack and bike from damage. the break away part would then be reloaded or replaced with a small cheap part to remount.

scottcolbath (sp?) has jimjib's ole bike w/ a good setup - using conduit clamps (adel clamps) as the break away part. they cost almost nothing and you can throw spares in the pannier for the eventual break away. only problem is they are a permanent mount and for some they want some way to quickly take them off and put them on; lockable thru the latch or a cable thru the pelican security holes

You will break the subframe mounting a heavy box out on the tail. I believe Jimjibs bike had already been repaired. It's nothing but a flat tongue out there, with no real support. Okay on the street, no way for off road.

Yup, many have reinforced their LC4 subframe - Loaded's done it - purdy easy I hear. Always a good thing. But if you put your "lighter" bags on their and stuff them full of 50+ lbs then a few pounds of bags ain't gonna make much difference.

Indeed even side bags are rough on the subframe if you ride fast over the rough stuff. They do have the advantage of tranfering the weight triangularly down into the lower portion of the subframe, and also gain support from the grab handle mounts, which are located in a braced area. Only the rear mounts put stress on the "tongue".
