New Tag
Rail Dog in Wisconsin Dells. The best Chicago dog you can get without driving to Chicago to get it. In fact, the owner Tony used to live down there for about 20 years before moving full time up to the Dells.
![]() Yes, thats a real caboose. The only caboose in the world serving hot dogs, or so I was told. Its a 1956 Milwaukee Road caboose that Tony found in a junk yard about 100 miles north of the Dells. He had it hauled down to his place and a crane plopped it in his front yard. He fixed it up and started selling hot dogs out of it.

Cool tag! Did you happen to see veggie dogs on the menu?

Sure they got veggies, you can see the onion, the dark green stuff is pickle relish, the light green is the pickled jalapeno pepper. He also has some other relish with onions or peppers or something, almost looked like okra in it. Lots of veggies so its a well balanced meal.
Seriously though, no, I dont think he has a tofu hotdog. Just Vienna brand dogs, an Italian Beef sandwich (I think Vienna) and tamales (he dont make those and I have never had one so I dont know whats in it). Frys, those are probably vegetarian. Its just a small hot dog stand with a limited menu. Its a throw back to the Dells in the old days where everywhere you went to eat was a small mom and pop place. Think pre-McDonaldification of the Dells only this place just opened a few years ago. Tony used to work in construction and has since retired. He owns the hotel in the background of the caboose so you could call if you wanted to see what he serves (phone number is in my picture). Its a family run place (both the hotel and the Rail Dog) so you will get ahold of Tony, his wife or kids. The tag dont require you to eat but the dogs are great and Tony is a character so you will really be missing out if you dont at least stop in for a soda or bottle of water. Tony is from Poland and has a very thick accent. He likes to talk to the people and its an entertaining stop (even more so if you have the kids with you. Bells, whistles, lights, levers to turn, switches to click, wheels to spin. The kids love it). He even has some pictures in the caboose from back when it was in use as well as when he got it and brought it to the Dells. You will remember the Rail Dog long after you have forgotten your meal at Famous Daves or Culvers. |

Stone Cold
OK, I'm new to this so I may not be doing it right, but....
I've seen some tags as "find it if you can" and others as "here's exactly where it is." I personally prefer the former to the latter, so I'm tagging up what I think could be on the harder end of the spectrum. Have at it. Good luck! - canoeten canoeten screwed with this post 05-06-2011 at 12:10 PM |
