Thanks for checking out the report SCJ. DV should be a nice temp in the fall. I think we got the tail end of the nice weather before it becomes sweltering.

Day 4- Wednesday 4/20/11
Hawthorne, NV to Pyramid Lake to home.

A real coffee was in order to start off the day.

While looking for a hotel the night before we noticed the Hawthorne Ordinance
Museum. We stopped to look before heading out of town. This shark missile was cute.

The owner of the place opened the doors an invited us in. It was full of military memorabilia which was quite interesting if you are a fan of the stuff. We both are.

We spent over an hour here. Well worth the stop.
Almost missed the McDonald's breakfast cutoff time.

Our Awesome American soldiers headed out for a bit of field training.

We pass Walker Lake and notice a sign warning of Big Horn Sheep. Saw a huge group to the left and once again ended up with blurry photos. Got a shot of these 4 birds in the sky.

From HWY 95 we took ALT 95 to Yearington, NV. This stretch of highway was very, very, very windy. I held on like a baby opossum for many miles.

Continued on to Fernley, NV where the wind was even worse across the open farm land. Did not see another bike on ALT 95.

I managed to pull the camera out for one pic.

Day 4 to be continued.

Thanks BE. We had been wanting to see DV for many years. Finally got a chance. Now that we have been, I can't wait to get there again.

Day 4- 4/20/11 continued.

From Fernley we took HWY 447 to Sutcliffe, NV which is part of the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. Took a right on HWY 446 which borders the western side of the lake. It must have been a good day for fishing Lahontan Cutthroat Trout judging by the amount of people along the shore.

The lake is the largest remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan that covered much of northwestern Nevada at the end of the last ice age. Pyramid Lake was the deepest point in Lake Lahontan, reaching an estimated 890 feet (270 m) due to its low elevation level relative to the surrounding basins. In the 19th century the vicinity of the lake was inhabited by the Paiute. The lake is now completely within the Reservation. It was first mapped in 1844 by John C. Fremont, the American discoverer of the lake who also gave it its English title.

The wind was ripping across the highway again.

Pyramid Lake.

We stopped here to get the winter gloves back out.

Pretty tore up looking in the windstorm.

The pavement ends soon.

The only trees we see for many miles.

Pyramid Lake, the northern end.

The dirt road leading home.

Stopped here for a lunch of Subway sandwiches.

Pavement begins again up ahead. Our local snow covered mountains are in view.

From here it took us about 45 minutes to get home.

Total miles in 4 days: 1016
Gas: $117
Lodging: $138
Food: $100

This was a great trip for us. Finally made it to Death Valley. It is funny how the desert attracts us. It makes sense, as it is so different from the pine tree forests where we live. No doubt we missed most of the Death Valley "attractions", but that is okay. We will make another trip there someday.

I loved the cactus plants so much that I bought these when we returned.

Thanks for following us along. Until next time...

Great report and photos! Took me "home" so to speak... lived in Reno from 2002-2005 and then from 2006-2008. Rode a lot of trails around Pyramid Lake on my ATVs, just outside of the reservation.

BTW Pyramid lake is the terminus for the Truckee River, which originates at Lake Tahoe. And another neat tidbit... the default photo on the Original iPad is of Pyramid Lake.

What a great loop! I'm thinking of "storing" my bike at my folks' in AZ for the winter. I've loved feeling the desert just driving and hiking, and I'm looking forward to riding it!

Thank you for the history pictures, too. I like to think what it would've been like to live in those other circumstances. Makes me appreciate my days even more.

Thanks Rob. The other report I did last summer took place in the Black Rock Desert-I bet you went out there a couple of times. I had not been around Pyramid in quite a few years, so it was cool to see it again. Went dirtbiking in the Wendel area a few weeks ago, and you can see the lake in the background of this pic. Cool area for sure.

Loops are so much better than going back the same way. I hope to ride in Arizona some day. I want to see those huge cacti. The desert is surreal, I know how you feel. Glad you enjoyed the history aspect, rough times back then. Thank you DD.

Thanks Dave! I took tips from your thread about the art of report writing before I jumped into this one. I really was trying to photograph the full effect of the wind storm---without stopping the bike. Tough to ride through but beautiful to look at!

Thanks for following along the whole way through. I do enjoy the Susanville area filled with endless dirt roads amongst the pines.
