What model Arai did Ewan and Charley use?
On the "Long Way Round"?
Some sort of Motocross model? They looked like they would have good ventilation for summer riding. What are the advantages/disadvantges of such a helmet for around town and touring purposes? |

The Arai XD has been on my wish list. I use an off road helmet but when it has been cold out or in rain, that is when I had wished for the XD with the sheild to flip down. Low cost alternitive is a neoprene face mask at ski / outdoor shop. Works well to beat the chill and protect from rain. Small and easy to store in pocket of riding jacket and a heck of a lot less money. Under 10 bucks. Best deal on the XD I can find is $350-375 for a solid color. HAPPY Riding

I was looking on Ebay - right now they have 3 listed. 2 mediums and a size XL. $345; $203 and $0.99 (lots of time left)
See if this link will do the search: Arai XD on Ebay If anyone has one or buys one, I would appreciate a review. |

Hey, I told you above they are great. Quieter than my Shoei RF900, fit very well. Love the beak for blocking the sun and it is well ventilated. Great helmet that I use every day for every kind of riding when I am on the GS. I still use the Shoei on the KRS, but other than that it is XD for me....
I give it 5 stars. |

really nice
the xd is a really nice helmet but frankly for the price i expected a more. i never got to touch one in person so it was a blind order via the internet. the viser doesn't lock and migrates up, even with the side screws as tight as possible. the chin strap seems further back than normal and gives me the sensation of choking. and the vent system is cheap plastic like you'd find on a 150$ helmet. the style and niche it fills is perfect for me but i would have rather been able to spend half on an HJC or Shoei version with the same safety ratings. too bad they don't offer one.

I agree, i dont see a better helmet on the market for ADVRiding but frankly the helmet falls short of expectations.
My visor doesnt migrate up, but the face shield never wants to stay up. When in the up position, wind vibration will tend to slowly push it down. I dont feel the choaking sensation, but the helmet feels almost too low. As if the back comes down too far and thus i have to crank my head up to see where im going. It falls short of expectations and can be somewhat annoying. But the reality is that nothing on the market is better. I just wish they would refine it and make it what you'd expect it to be. The best of all worlds expensive ass helmet. nk

I love mine. I have not experienced choking or visor migration. I do love the wider peripheral field of vision. Also the venting is better than my Quantum. It has delivered as expected for me. Aria helmets cost more to be sure but in the end it is worth it to me.

I just got mine last week so have not had too much time to test it; however, what I little I have done I am very satisfied. The shield does not migrate up or down, in fact it is almost too stiff. I don't get the "lift" on the peak even at 70mph, instead it pushes slightly downward. With my HJC dirt bike helmet it is a constant fight with the wind on the peak as it wants to lift me off the bike.
The XD is noisy but so are all ventilated helmets, including my XR7. Got mine at Moto Liberty here in Dallas. (they are 20% off list on all Arai's) I know you can get better deals over the net but on all helmets and jackets/pants & boots, I have to try them on first.

I don't have those problems but I often ride without the sun visor
My only beef is the chin bar is pretty far out and that makes for more air in under the helmet. Sure sometimes a good thing but its colder when its cold and noisier. My Signet GT was a better street helmet but this fits the bill for what they intended. Off road and in between its pretty great! Id give it four outa five stars just because it isn't perfect on the street even tho' it isn't really a fair expectation |

I expect Shoei to come out with one in the future... there is a worldwide market for this..
