Hola GB.
Some of us are planning on going to the Ice Breaker ride in Ely this May 16-18th. It's organized in the Canadian regional forum which I'm starting to keep a closer eye on. Heck, we're closer to many of their rides than we are to the rest of the Midwest! Check it out here if you haven't already.

I'd love to attend, but I'm taking a white water kayak course that spans two weekends in May, one of which is that weekend.

Hope you guys have a great time and great weather.

I'll be in Duluth for the day tomorrow with my DRZ in tow.

Can you let us know what condition the Echo Trail is in? There will probably be a few guys wanting to check it out. Thanks

It's going to be in the high 60's here in the next couple days so let's hope this slowly moves towards Ely!!!

The Echo is in great shape as are most of the roads on the SNF. A few around Brule are a little thick yet but after the weekend they should all be passable. and Jwalters, I'm in for Saturday!

Any recommendations for roads up nort?

My brother recently had a lapse in employment, so he's coming to visit me in Mpls, and we'll be headed north. I've never really explored Northern MN on bike, and figured we'd do that.

We'll be headed to Ouimet Canyon, but other than that, we're pretty open.

What are the must sees?

Any good camping?

Have you guys up there even thawed out yet?

Not much has thawed out yet, at least up here.. Raining out now, that might help with the snow melt and add a little flavor for the mud…

#1 to Ely is the best paved twisty rd. West Tomahawk to Babbit for a little gravel,(that should be open) Gunflint trail..

They're calling for 68 and sun in Ely and 61 along the shore this Saturday, so that will help!!!

TTaM: What size bikes are you riding? A good way to see the area (shameless plug forthcoming) is to come up for the Shindig. Also, if you are somewhat tech savvy check out Cannonshot's gps tracks for the Arrowhead here. Tons of camping, primitive, USFS/State/County camp sites, managed campgrounds, and hotels. Depends what you are looking for.

If you're looking for others to ride with, you found the right thread. Drop a note here, and I'm sure someone will be up for a ride.

My brother is on a Versys and I have a V-Strom 650. We're both on more street oriented tires. The Shindig looks imposing for that. We're planning this next weekend, simply because he isn't working right now, and I took a random long weekend.

If you're going to Ouimet Canyon, here's some good blacktop in that area. The ride to Armstrong Station is interesting, riding far north in the bush on blacktop. In addition, west of Thunder Bay, there's Kakabeka Falls, which are impressive falls. From there, ride south to Nolalu and then the Silver Mountain Hwy back to the border on blacktop. Another is to ride to Silver Islet, east of Thunder Bay. Interesting mining history there and on your way to Ouimet Canyon, again a blacktop ride.

In MN there's the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais, with good food at Trail Center. Hy 1 from Finland to Ely is known for its many curves west of Isabella.

Re: Thunder Bay

For anyone headed up this way in the next bit. Backroads are still mostly covered in snow although the rain we had last night and the forecasted warmer weather for this weekend should take care of that. Everything is extremely wet and muddy but no problem with blacktop roads. Pass Lake now has gas again with the opening of a Flying-J.

Just remember that May 19th is a holiday up here, so lots of stuff may be closed!
