for those of us who dont read russian, google translate's effort:

"The V International Bike Festival "Balkhash-2011 ', held last weekend, attended the guest of the U.S. Doug Votke.

"This is a very big country. You can ride all day and just around the steppe. This is a beautiful place in the world "- with a smile said Doug Votke. Travel to Kazakhstan for him - the longest part of motocross in his life, from Berlin to Magadan.

I have traveled across Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and here I am. Now I have to route through Russia, "- curled amerikaansky biker.

According to him, he knew that the Kazakhs are renowned hospitality, but it did not expect so. "Every time I stopped, people talked to me and tried to explain the way - the Kazakhs left a good impression of myself" - says a guest from the States.

Doug travels the world for many years. Last year he rode your bike across Iraq. Traveled to Central and South America, Canada, as well as in much of Eurasia.

interactive map

Those of us who are not likely to do such an adventure can benefit from the following little game. Click on a country name then drag it to the map.

And you thought you knew the Mid East?

Hey Doug

I'm sure we met these Polish guys ourselves on our way east to west from Vladivostok to UK. Did one of them have a big off which dislocated his shoulder or did this happen after you had met them - I think we saw them somewhere in the Ukraine.

Well, that's not an accurate description of the Middle East or the *stan countries. Mid East is a geographical region and not a political term encompassing the whole Muslim world, as used in the Bush era.

Think of the Middle East as a geographical region that covers all the countries in the Turkey-Iran-Egypt triangle plus the Arabian peninsula.

North Africa and Central Asia are NOT in the Middle East, apart from Egypt.

The interesting thing is, there is NOT a single *stan country in the Middle-East. Pakistan and Afghanistan have strong connections with the Middle East but they aren't exactly in the Middle East. Pakistan used to be India, so they are in the Indian subcontinent and not in the Mid East. I'd personally say Afghanistan geographically is at the junction of Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.

And you thought you learnt a thing or two about the Mid East?

Pretty cool I thought! He & his friend are heading to Mongolia soon on their bikes. I hope that trip went well!

That sure is Ilya from Krasnoyarsk! I met him south of Kemerovo end of July 2010 when he was returning from a week in the Altai. Already at that time he mentioned about his plans to travel to Mongolia. He has a low-mileage mint condition AT that had been imported from Japan (maybe by the Vladmoto guys - say hi to all of them from me!).
