You see trees like this here & there, decorated with strips of cloth, & some coins tossed on the ground.

I made it to Ulan Ude, home of the biggest Lenin head

And met with Bulat, who had invited me to stay with him

And we had a BBQ

I spent most of the day on the phone with Sergey, from Nishny Novogorad, who is a friend of Misho & Mikhail from Moscow. I donít know who he is, but he called the customs boss at the Mongolian border, and said for me to go down there, & they would fix my paperwork problem. So I went to MGL. I got to the border, and no problems, just write a letter saying what happened, & why I didnít have the document. Then I had to leave Russia, & come back. So I did a U turn, & went back into Russia.
Nope, not good enough. I need a MGL stamp on my passport. Why? As no one will see it? Because I must. Hey, its Russia! So I tell them I donít have a visa (as a US citizen, I donít need one, but Im hoping they donít know this) but of course one guy knows this, so that excuse doesnít work.
So off to MGL I go.

We all remember how much fun THIS can be! So I park the bike, & go inside. I get my passport stamp. Great! Oh no, its not that easy! Then they are filling out the papers on the bike. I tell em I donít want to come in, I just need a stamp. You ever try explaining anything to a Mongolian customs officer?
Its sort of like trying to teach a pig to sing. It justs wastes your time & annoys the pig.
So I finally just figure it will be faster this way. (I did think about just walking out, getting on the bike & leaving, but theres a checkpoint you have to cross, & didnít want added problems)
This window
That window
Get a stamp, get another stamp
Look at the bike,. EtcÖ.etc
They ask how long Im staying in MGL, I say 30 minutes
They look at me funny
Then figure I cant speak right, & give me 30 days. Finally, Im thru.
Theres a hotel close by, so I figure Iíll just spend the nite, soak in some of that lovely MGL border culture, & return in the morning. As I leave, they stop me, & want me to buy 20.00 worth of insurance. I try to explain that Im just spending 1 nite, & point to the hotel that I can see from there. (last time, no insurance was offered or needed)
Nope, have to buy it.. Its 630pm, the border closes at 7. can I make it?
So I tell the guy no thanks, & turn back. Heís probably still talking about the crazy biker that didnít want to spend 20 bucks & left MGL.
Back thru the bullshit. They all look at me funny
ĎI TOLD you 30 minutes!í
I get thru ok, and the Russians stayed open long enough to get me back thru, as they were expecting me. So Im back in Russia, 600km and 2 days wasted over a piece of paper. But at least Im legal now, & wont be sweating about being stopped by the police.

So Im back heading east again, on my way to Chita. Saw this nicely loaded Izh goin down the road

I get to a town, & decide to look for a room. Iím wandering thru the town, & ahead I see a cop, so I head over to ask him. About that time he sees me, & waves the magic stick for me to stop.
Before he can say anything, Iím saying hello, Iím lost, Im from America, where is a hotel, etc, & got him & his partner all confused. He must have forgotten why he was going to stop me, as he never said anything about it.
I guess business was slow, because they took me to the police garage, had me park the bike inside, then gave me a ride to the hotel (there was no safe parking at the hotel)

Escort thru town

Wasnít much here to see, just crumbling buildings & old monuments

Half the town hadnít been painted since breshnev, the other had fresh pastel pinks & blues.

This was a nice antenna, made from a kamaz head gasket

the next morning, I walked to the cop shop to get my bike

Ride care-free now that the BS is done.

I think I'd be stymied with language barrier. How do you do it? A combination of each party knowing a little of each other's language?

Ready for a hot shower?

How'd that Ural hack hold up after all the folks climbed on top?

Probably like any other day on a ural, four or five broken spokes, lost .compression in one cylinder, coil gave out, holed a piston, and cracked the frame.. but that could have happened before the people piled on.

I'm Russian/English bilingual, completely.

Like to ride in adverse conditions and travel through nowhere.

Young, energetic, willing to travel.

Always manage to find beer or vodka where you wouldn't think there'd be any.

I suggest you (or Colebatch, if you're reading this) hire me, I would come in handy.

Colebatch doesn't need to hire an interpreter to find beer.

Try those two British actor chaps - they hired lots of people, all over the place !!!!
