We spent 2 nites in Chita, as it was cold, Poly was sick, and we needed a break. We headed towards Ulan Ude early, after scraping the ice off the bike seats.
At least it was sunny!

I’ve traveled this stretch of road several times, and theres really nothing exciting about it. We did finally get to see a bear, it ran across the road in front of us.

At a gas station, turn off your stinky Izh before you get to the pump

We found a decent room about 2 hours before Ulan Ude. We wanted to make it there, but it refused to warm up, and we were beat from being cold all day.

The next morning we got to Ulan Ude pretty early. We didn’t stop in town, but we went south of there about 20km to a big Buddhist datsan (monestary). I went there in 06, & had been wanting to go visit again, plus I knew Poly would like it.
Its right off the main road to Mongolia (so I know the road well)
Theres even a famous monk here who has been in a trance for 50 years!
(he may be dead, after he has been sitting for 50 years, it would be hard to tell)

They have a small market/gift shop out front

Prayer wheels are everywhere. You spin them clockwise as you walk around them

Many cabins that the monks build to live in, as well as a few families that must work here.

Pictures inside the temples are not allowed (shhhhh)

All the pretty colors…. Imagine being in here with a head full of acid!

Down the road, near lake Baikal, many people along the road selling dried fish

Poly checks how cold it is. Its friggin FREEZING!

We got a room in a town along the lake, nice place, and the guard let us park right next to his shack.

Huge hotel, but no guests.
