And in the interest of full disclosure I ride about the most 'standard' bike on the planet.

What?
I love UJMs, standard, naked or what ever you want to call them. Have a Bandit 1200 and love it. Personally I think those Triumphs are sexy.

How about this? If you didn't like the Speed Trip then you'll hate my bike...but I love it!

You can still get these...Bandit 1200N. If that doesn't do it for you, then I don't know what will.

yeah new bikes with all their technology and price tag to match isnt what your after and we dont want a new take on 'retro bike' either... so your best bet is to find a REAL old z1000 or cb750 and be done with it..

As others mentioned, UJMs still exist but they are often dressed up to look more 'exciting' or 'contemporary'. Also, these days they often get adventure design cues as well, causing untold amount of confusion here on ADVrider :) ER6N, Versys, Gladius and the upcoming Crossrunner are all UJMs. Yes, they do have more plastic than UJMs of old - such is the price of progress :)

An aesthetically beautiful engine is mechanical art, and a huge part of the appeal of a motorcycle for me. Swoopy plastic fairings aren't generally beautiful (Ducati 916 notwithstanding). Boy racers can have their Gixxers. Give me a Triumph Speed Triple, MV Agusta Brutale, Ducati Streetfighter, Norton Commando 961, etc.

for me that is where Monsters lost the plot. The air cooled ones are beautiful, the S4R is a convoluted mess. |

How about this, much more "standard" looking than others suggested.

Plain standard motorcycles <> naked sport bikes (Speed Triple, Tuono, Brutale, Streetfighter, Hypermotard)
I agree with this list: BMW F800R BMW R1200R Ducati Monster Yamaha FZ8 Suzuki Gladius Unfortunately the best looking standard in the world isn't offered outside of JAPAN!

That CB1100 is beautiful. Wish they had those here. I've ridden an SV650 standard. I did like it, and it is certainly a fine bike, but not quite the jack of all trades thing. Couldn't see riding it with a pillion. |
