Everything I have read on the US model 500 EXC, says it is 50 state legal. I have also seen pics of the US model and it has DOT lights, turn signals, tires, etc.

There will not be a 450 EXC or 530 EXC in 2012 from what I have read. Unless they re-badge the left over 2011 models like they did on the 2010 Champions ED. which were left over 2009's.

The 500 & 530 motors are both 510cc.

The word is that there will be a 500 and 350 exc (street legal) along with the xc-w versions. The 450 only in the xc-w version.

The same thing was said of the '07 when it came out legal in all 50 states. Once you do the cannisterectomy and install the Akropovic full race system it will not be "legal" anywhere. Most people just do the mods and don't worry about it. CA might be different in that the enforcement personnel might know if you no longer have the recirculation hoses hooked up to the carb. If you are paranoid then just buy it and run it stock in any of the 50 states.

Maybe you guys missed this link earlier. This guy XSSSIVE is in Lake Tahoe and says

"Just got my new 500 XC-W dual sported."

Maybe actually Nevada side of Tahoe? I guess NV has easier laws?

In some states it is a lot easier to tag a non-street legal bike. In Oklahoma if the title doesn't say off-road use only, some people just walk in and buy a tag. It is then up to the police, Highway Patrol, etc. to cite you if you don't have street legal equipment on the bike. If the title does say off-road use only, you can still tag the bike if you put a DOT legal dual-sport kit on it. ----- That includes 2-strokes.

That's correct Raul. Sad....but correct.

@Stu, you don't live in CA (obviously) or you would know the f'd up "rules" here. Back in the day you could slap a DS conversion kit on anything, head to a DMV out in the middle of nowhere, and find a friendly person behind the counter to issue you a plate. Not any more. Thanks to Kompooters, the DMV here has entered the modern age (Bronze I think ) and when they key in your VIN, everything about your bike gets pulled up and if it's not designated as a street legal bike from the factory, no plate for you! I can't remember the model year cutoff date, but certainly anything made within the last 6-8 years falls under these "rules". Hell, it's so bad that people who have plates have been issued notices from the DMV to return them! And if you don't, no big deal, they just refuse to renew your reg. Bastards.....

@Zenjen, you are correct, I am going by pics on the KTM USA site, KTM Int'l site, and the report/pic from an inmate in this thread (but maybe they posted an XC-W pic not realizing this is a EXC thread???). I will be very happy to be wrong!

Yep, they do.

If he has relatives or property in NV, he can register it there and either keep it registered there, or put 7500 miles on it and then bring it across the state line to CA as a used bike and see if he can get a CA plate for it. Given the date of manufacture, he likely won't be able to do the latter because any vehicle registered in CA now must have stickers/stamps stating it meets CA emission requirements. A 500 XC-W obviously won't have that, unless someone gets creative with a scanner/printer and has access to stickers from an EXC.....not that anyone would ever do that bein' illegal and all.....

OK, I'll tell ya.... I was transferred to the Bay area for a year, and the bastards took away my plate on my CO plated CRF-450. They said too bad for you, but they did offer to give me a nice green sticker instead.

The injection is incredibily smooth! Feels like a big improvement over the 530, again.

LOVE the bike and would not mind adding one to the stable :) now just need the right lottery ticket..
