Looking for a crate for a KTM 990 Adv in Anchorage

Hi I'm looking for a crate that I could use for my KTM 990 ADV for the 1 of August. I'll be shipping the motorcycle south to Seattle and it would be nice to recycle a crate that someone previously used to ship the bike up. Of course I'm willing to pay a reasonable price.

Could you please post the dimensions and the price?
Also I'll be shipping using alaska air because I'd like to be on the same plane and they quoted me 1500$ for bike and passenger ticket but the bike is with the first come first served (unless you pay 3000$). Do anyone know a small charter flight company that would offer the same service but will guarantee the bike on the flight I choose?

Thanks for your help!!

Alaska air cargo doesn't require crating. I don't believe you can ship a motorcycle on a passenger flight, only a cargo flight. Barb

I called them and they confirmed that crating is required. Yes you can be on the same plane. The.service is.called combi: half of the plane is cargo and half is passengers.

Crate bottom

I have an aluminum base pallet that my H-D was shipped up on from CA. It is really solid and more than large enough for your bike. It has built-in tie-down rings and slots for the tires. It was specifically made for a bike. Once the bike is on and tied down, you build the sides/top out of basic wood. It's been sitting in the shed for 4 years waiting for a new home. I'll go measure it if you are interested. I can also take a picture of it with my XR650L sitting on it to give a size comparison.

I'm in Wasilla and if you're coming through I can arrange to get it to Anchorage. If you want, we can crate the bike at my place, load it up on the trailer, and drive you/bike to airport on your fly day. PM me for address and phone number/email. Price? If you're coming from Ontario, bring me a flag or something cool to hang in the shop.
Jim

I thought Alaska Airlines only flew the combi instate. It's the old 737-200, if I'm not mistaken. Used to fly on it all the time in and out of Kodiak years ago.

Yeah, thats what I understood too, only in-state. Been in 'em many times flying to Prudhoe in the 70's but recently on a flight back from Barrow. Same planes? man, those things are old.

Maybe they're flying one to Seattle? doesn't seem likely.

The guys I've talked to that used Alaska Air Caro parked the bike inside an "igloo," no crate required (like Barb said) and of course that was a cargo only flight. BUt the fellow told me there was a requirement to be a "known shipper" whatever that means.

What's the name of the Anchorage outfit that does bike shipping? I've heard it mentioned here several times. That sounded like a good solution.

We got factory BMW crates for our 1200GS bikes from The Motorcycle Shop in Anchorage for $75 each. I imagine that KTM would fit... Call Keith and see if he has any in stock.

Something amiss with the akair info. They shipped my 500 on bike for about $500 all fees inclusive in the igloo one year ago. No hazmat allowed on combi flights. At the time the per lb rate was $.63 and you had to get a$50 hazmat permit down the block from cargo terminal in ANC

cubdriver, how did you go about arranging shipping on Alaska Air? I'm planning on ferrying up and flying back (Anchorage to Seattle) in August, and I like the igloo/Alaska Air option that I've heard about.

Air ship

I went to the Ak air cargo terminal at ANC INT and talked to them. Because a bike is hazmat, it has to go on a flight exclusively cargo. Also, you have to get a hazmat permit and there is a freight forwarder right down the block that does it for $50. They at AK AIR can tell you the name of that place. That was easy as long as you know the weight of the bike. AK AIR will weigh it for you. You have to drain the fuel, or run it out to near empty. the oil stays in. they will check your bags for other hazmat stuff, like gas cans and lighters. Each will require a separate hazmat permit for an additional $50. (of course you will throw the items out rather than pay it). They do not care if you have gear and I believe you are allowed to lock the bags, maybe they even require it. Of course all your gear figures into the final weight and they charged .63 per lb then, same now I think for "non priority". Check their website for the rates. It was easier than it sounds. They put it in the igloo. You pay for the weight of the bike PLUS the igloo, which you dont have to pay to rent or anything. Seattle and Portland are the only "cargo only" destinations they fly out of Alaska, and hazmat must be on the cargo only. My bike weighed ouit at 500 lbs exactly and the total charge was somewhere around 570 bucks by the time they add in the fees and other bullshit. It will go out "space available", which will be pretty quick UNLESS you catch the heavy salmon shipping season. I think the same rate applies from either Fairbanks or Anc. It arrives a long walk or short cab ride away from the SEATAC passenger terminal. They have hours of business of course, so be aware of that. Hope it works for you. It sure was nice when I did it.

BTW, I am not a "known shipper" and that did not present an obstacle. I got different stories on that, but in the end it was not a problem. PM me if youi have any questions. Dick
