I answered YES in your poll but...

I think the number of lives saved is very low. I'm sure occasionally someone is noticed when they're in a blind spot or passing that otherwise would have been taken out.

I don't think the marginal increase in safety is worth the "cost" of noise pollution, bad press, etc... Kind of like mandatory ABS.

Pretty much stands to reason that if horns an sirens are used for the purpose of getting noticed that a loud exhaust would do the same thing. Do horns and sirens save lives? Why do EV's use them? Why are vehicles equipped with horns? I believe it is for the safety of the EV and other traffic.

If "quiet" is desired start by making high performance engines silent.

Why don't I just hear the whine of tires on pavement at the races? Everyone would want to emulate that right?

Fact is a loud healthy motor is music to a lot of people. Make quiet more "attractive" and lead by example and the masses will follow.

As I stated before I like the sound myself... Though I get annoyed with how some bikers use them.

Blipping their throttle unnecessarily while stopped for example. What's up with that?

Or pulling up in front of a crowded Harley store (like happened today) and revving their engine for no reason. Just about every bike already there has loud pipes as well and yet idiots ride in and have to rev their engine. WTF? Even the loud pipe peeps thought was stupid and shook their heads.

And therein lies the problem of really answering the question. We don't how many times someone in a car heard something beside them and decided at the last second not to change lanes.

I ride bikes, I drive cars. I've never had an accident on either aside from low speed in parking lots on both the bike and car in 30 years and maybe 750,000 miles.

I consider myself to be an "aware" driver and I have on two occasions attempted to change lanes with a bike in my blind spot and almost took out the bikes because I did not see or hear them. On the other hand I have waited to change lanes when I've heard a bike but didn't see it.

Sure it's anecdotal, but it's real in my experience.

We can argue until we're blue if the face about this and most likely the majority of us dislike really loud bikes, myself included. Sure rider experience and skill play a huge role in one's safety.

But we can't dispute that a loud bike is more noticable than a quiet one and a noticed bike moving in traffic is safer than a unnoticed stealth bike.

So it seems that would favor the "loud" camp's argument.

I think the line should be drawn at "no straight pipes". There must be some kind of baffle in the exhaust system. That would be a start, at least.

It has always been down to legistation, or at least since sometime around 1979 when motorcycles were federally regulated to be no louder than 84 dB.

That's why most all aftermarket pipes, cans, etc. say something to the affect of "for off-road use only". The problem is that municipalites had no good way to enforce the federal law and just excused it until motorcyles (particularly cruisers) became so popular and the residents started complaining.
