+1

Used to stress me out and freak friends out who would say that my bottom end was fried....but now I just live with it and keep riding, that was thirty thousand km's ago.

You guys almost have me convinced and judging by those on this thread there seems to be plenty of expert opinion, however mine just suddenly started making noise and didn't have any for the past month....at all. Ok, so the start up noise from the cct is normal, point taken. What about clatter after its warm and ridden for awhile? My most accurate description of yhe sound would be a "vibrating coil spring sound ". This is a constant sound that was not noticable before and developed after the start up racket. Again every opinion is appreciated. 33

Maybe you can post a recording or video?

The LC8 sounds like a bucket of bolts at idle. Cam chain noise can come and go, hot or cold, it's not always consistent.

exactly. When I first bought the bike the engine was so noisy I thought the gearbox was full of loose nuts and bolts. Now I just put in earplugs and ride.

It's the cam chains, my bike does the exact same thing and I had the same reaction at first...

I think there was a TSB on it, and some people had luck getting it "fixed" at dealers and others didn't

Exactly bro you are right, that´s how KTM 990-950 sounds.... and like you said, as long as it goes away in a few seconds other wise you should check oil level or pressure or the hydraulic cam chain tensioners.

I've noticed that using a 5w50 weight oil significantly reduced my start up clatter.

Update.

Let run for 5 minutes and sit for 5 minutes.
Checked oil again. Oil is half between max and min. Oil is light btown and very foamy.
Waterpump seals? Would this make oil viscosity so thin, thus explaining the clatter? Hmm....

If the main filter is damaged by coolant, this can cause improper oil flow, marginal oil pressure, and associated camchain noise. I assume you're oil pressure warning light is unlit, but you cannot always trust the idiot light for marginal pressure. It's quick to check the main filter and inside of outer clutch cover for evidence of coolant ingress. As I said, camchain noise is a symptom of marginal pressure (among other things, including the hydraulic operation of the CCT), so you may have a marginal pressure issue if you are getting consistent noise.

Thumb OBL is dead

If the filter is clogged enough to restrict flow, it will be obvious on visual inspection.

I'm glad I found this thread , my 06 has been making the same chatter on start up the last 9k'ish and after 2/3 seconds the sound goes away and I assumed it was a KTM thing as I read it somewhere else. This just helps ease the mind a little more when she chatters on start up. I got mine with 4500 miles and it didn't start to chatter until around 8 or 9K or so, I think it just finely broke in . I did change both tensioners to get a little piece of mind, but only a little help as she still chatters, only on start up and all other times pure's like a cat when warmed up, well except when I try to accelerate in the wrong gear , 5th and 6th do not like anything under 4K rpms.
