Wicked Mexico Maddog 1600

Howdy
Just got back from doing the coastal run with Rosen's rides . It is hard to top gas pipes description of copper canyon but for riding excitement we had better weather for most of the trip. As a result the score is as follows Day one: broken leg for a rider on a KLR 650 , Day two : Different rider went off cliff on the low road and KLR 650 ended up in tree. Day three : Another KLR 650 Rider hit truck head on on road to Chinipas. Day three also saw stumpy's XR650 R smack the owner of the hotel in Chinipas and knocked her inside the waterheater closet.
Day four : Another close call Head on with a truck of course 650 KLR. LET me know if you guys are interested in the story with pictures. Of course ,no trip is complete without a hearty bowl of bull nuts soup at Temoris.

We are planning the ride for 2006 called the Maddog 1600 we will ride from Presidio Texas to Creel then the Rosens tour through Copper canyon . Then we will take the ferry acrosss the sea of cortez to LA Paz. From la Paz we will ride the Baja racecourse backwards to Ensenada. We will need twelve riders for this trip .The carnage will be high .

You guys will have to bear with me for pictures ,I have them on jpeg but am having trouble putting them in text ,I will have this sorted out in a day or two. The pictures are good,
Anyhow here goes 12 days in Mexico on a Honda XR650R.

I rode this bike on the Terlingua dual sport ride in November. Never washed it or changed the oil, did put a new back tire on it as it has a tendency to wear them out real quick. That was my entire trip preparation to ride in Mexico for 12 days.

Got to the 3 Palms in Presidio to meet up with the other 9 riders. At first I thought I was at a Shriner convention. These guys had electric hand grips, electric vests and every possible bag or doodad you could put on a KLR 650.Right away I knew this was going to be a fun ride because they thought they knew where they were going. I knew what the primitive roads were going to be like, but I didn't say a word.

Two of our riders rode in a new dump truck from Massachusetts .okay I understand the F150 was at the carwash or what.2600 miles in a dump truck to ride 12 days in Mexico. These guys were dedicated riders Joe was an exroad racer and ice racer he also did alot of enduro racing. I think he chewed nails for breakfast .He was the kind of guy who could crap his pants after a mexican breakfast and ride all day without changing them .Joe was so nice he even put gas in the snowblower for his wife before he left to go south for two months. His wife got 42 inches of snow while he was in Mexico. I liked Joe he had no remorse.
Josh was his partner but was more reserved.

There was a hill behind the motel .One guy fell three times on it , Now I felt real bad because Lee was going to be cannon fodder for Mexico roads.
As mentioned by Joel . Rosens did an excellent job getting us through the border. I have been on the advanced canyon ride before but it sure helps having Justin handle the paperwork.

I took my truck into Mexico for 200 miles as I like to save the rear tire ,I only run very progressive knobbies. Driving a truck in Mexico is pretty easy nobody can afford the gas so traffic is no problem except for Chihuahua.

First night in Cuatemoc picked up Raul the most important person on the trip ,he drives the support truck on roads that would scare a goat.Creel is 100 miles away but the long windy roads are verty scenic.

Okay. Now it is time for a vocabulary lesson I learned these words from Raul

Mucho Ca Ca Grande --------Screaming shits for gringo
Osheet--------------------- Gringo has driven motorcycle over cliff
Thumbs up------------------ Raul is drunk
Raul whiskey----------------- Raul would like to share your fine Kentucky bourbon
una mas dias una mas gringo no mas-- Every day there will be one less gringo
Gringo Loco -------------------Rauls name for stumpy

Pictures tomorrow and the first casulty just outside of creel

Eh?

Looking forward to the ride report and photos, but your post begs a couple of questions. First, is this a normal casualty count for Rosen's Rides? If so I'm concerned that they either don't screen their clients well for experience, or they're not guiding very well. Second, for folks with experience why the hell would this be an attractive option to going it without a guide service?

I know that Rosen's has a good reputation, but the idea of my trip being compromised by my trip buddies - whom in this case I wouldn't know and would have no say in their joining me - crashing, trashing bikes, jeopardizing the health of the inn-keeper, needing medical rescue, etc. at what seems like a high percentage certainly doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling about signing up.

I've never done an organized ride, but like the idea of having the local knowledge of a good guide, a bit more support than normal, and someone to hump extra luggage in a chase vehicle. But sheeesh, the prospect of this sort of "adventure" kinda turns me off to the whole organized, guided trip idea.

Those are actually good questions.

No personal attack meant on ya MB, but Rosen's doesn't ride the bike for the customer. The rider has to accomplish that task on his very own. If you ride hot, you run the risk. I'm reasonably sure Rosen's wasn't driving the truck that the rider head-on collided with, nor were they riding the guy's bike that crashed into the land lady. Or pushed the other poor guy over the cliff. I'm also willing to bet they weren't the landlady either. Etc....

That aside, the attractive part is of this is having someone handling all the mind-numbing logistics of a ride in a place you don't know. Carrying your crap, finding a place to lay your dusty head, securing food for you, picking your broken body and bike off a remote piece of Mexican road when you screw up or are unfortunate enough to crash, and dragging the parts back to the US for you are the things that make having a sag pretty nice.

I like going on my own mostly, but it is also very refreshing to ride fast 'n light once in a while, and not having to worry about anything but riding. It's not for everyone. But damn, it's fun now and again.

YMMV.

Two of the three accidents on this ride were friends of mine (Vince and Lee). Two others from our local DFW group of KLR riders were also on the ride and had better luck. The KLR that went under the truck was driven by what I understand is a very talanted and experienced rider. He had the misfortune of meeting a truck which was on the wrong side of the road on a blind switch back. Going under was the correct choice. The KLR was trashed but was also repaired that night and ridden hard for another 8 days or so. It looks like absolute hell but it kept right on going.

The broken leg was actually an ankle and just bad luck. Vince pulled off at an overlook and hit a patch of gravel a bit heavy on the front brake. He just happened to catch his boot at an odd angle when the bike leaned over. Vince has only been riding off road for a little over a year but this happened early in the trip on pavement.

Lee is new to dirt and went off the side of the road in a tough corner on a steep hillside. The bike hung up in a tree just long enough for him to get under it so it could fall on him but he was OK after a few days in the support truck.

I don't have the pics but there's a ton of them available from those that went on the ride. I hope they post some.

FWIW, I understand that Rosen told the guys this was not typical for his rides and a couple of the repeat riders on this trip agreed.
