Marin Headlands: Morning Report

I had the morning off so decided head out to the Marin Headlands (is that poor word choice or just a poor play on words?)

It was 53 degrees and foggy heading up the Peninsula. But right at the Golden Gate, it cleared up! Near miraculous as it's often clear in the Bay, but foggy and overcast at The Bridge.

Check it out:

The front side up Conzelman Road was closed due to road work. So I went around the back side and came in the tunnel via Bunker Road, then cut up McCollough Road to the top.

Made it past the closure. No one up there at all...and incredible view.

Caught a freighter approaching the Golden Gate. If you look closely, you can see a Push Boat at the rear (it's not a "Tug" Boat if it's pushing, right?)

You can see the Bay Bridge to Oakland back there and Alcatraz Island on the upper left.

It was morning, so the sun is just out of the frame in the upper right...poor angle and it looks a bit washed out in the photo.

Note: you can see the fog layer way back there covering the lower half of the bay down to San Jose (where I started this morning).

Then I got to take that cool one-way, super steep, incredible view road down to the Headlands area.

I stopped part way to grab this view for y'all.

Down at the bottom, I put the 70-200mm lens on the 50d Canon and zoomed in to get this shot looking back towards the bridge and the City.

Stopped for a shot at one of the massive batteries out there.

Here's Battery Wallace.

Big Guns used to be in here: 25 mile range!

Now the Big Gun is the mighty GS with a 210 mile range!

Coming back over the Golden Gate, it looked like they were getting ready to paint the cables about half way.

I wonder how many times those have been painted since the bridge was built in the 1930s?

I also walked around in a redwood area...

...and found the UCSC mascot Banana Slug...trying to get on the Fast Track.

I know some riders about this fast too....

Great pics! I love it up there! Riding over the hill past those old fortifications and dropping down, what a view.
