Ninja 250 Firing One Cylinder

Only Firing One Cylinder

My bike was running perfect today, it was the first 80 degree day we've had. Tonight I tried to start it, and needed quite a bit of choke. Started up fine, and I drove it the 100 or so yards to the front door to pick up my girlfriend.

As I drove off with her on the back, i noticed a lot of hesitation as I let the clutch out, then the power surged at about 5 k and then I shifted, and lost the power again. It was running a little weird, but I was only going like 3 blocks. I pulled off to the side of the road, and the bike died when i turned the choke off. I got it running again, under fill choke, and noticed that the right header was cold. Did a quick check that the plug wires were still connected, and limped it the 2 blocks home. I noticed the cylinder did fire for a second or two, but then would die again. Took significant throttle to keep the bike running.

What should I look at when I look into this tomorrow? Any easy solutions? The spark plugs are less than 2k miles old, but those are going to be the first thing I check. What else?

thanks.

The ex250 is a 125 when running on one cyl.

Check the basics first:

Good battery
Spark
Fuel (fresh)
Compression
Vacuum leaks
Air leaks in airbox
Then clean the carbs. You might get lucky with Seafoam but nothing beats a good teardown carb cleaning.

...And people think my posts are useless!

Pour some carb cleaner fuel addative in the gas tank, and run it a bit. Sometimes the carb gets a little gummed from sitting, but a $1 bottle of this (you'll only need half a bottle for the tank) will probably sort out all your problems simply. At least, it works great for my Ninja 250.

ninja 250 carb sinc

Would you know where to connect a vacuum sinc to this bike? friend has one and it has unstabile idle and what I think is weak acceleration!

On the tops of each carb right before the intake boot there is a vacuum nipple. Both have hoses on them you'll need to remove -- one hose supplies vacuum to the fuel petcock and the other supplies vacuum to some emissions thing (I forgot).

The lines you remove from the nipples? No.

Keep in mind if you are doing this with the tank still mounted (if you have a special right angle screwdriver) you only have the fuel in the carb bowls to use because with no vacuum to the petcock, you'll get no fuel.
