276c reception
I had a little Garmin eTrex with one of those crappy patch antennas that I used to ride with from time to time on my last bike. Any time I'd ride on a road with trees on the side of the road, it would lose satellite reception. Since the point of this GS I'm riding is to get out into the woods, it would seem silly to get a GPS that only works in the greasy spoon parking lot. How's the reception on the 276c in wooded areas? Say, like your average forest service road? Does it cut in and out or is the reception pretty solid?

Much, much better.
The 276C uses a totally different antenna that is much more sensitive. Expect good reception under all but the densest tree cover, and then then its not bad.

Along the same lines, anyone know if there's some sort of a neoprene/plastic cover available on the market for 276C? I know they're waterproof enough and all, but I'd like to prevent the fine dust and mud from accumulating on or inside the tiny nooks and crannies of this fine piece of equipment. I just ordered one from the fine folks at Cycoactive and it should be here on Monday, just in time for a Valentine's Day present "for use in Havawife's car."
Didn't find anything on google, so I was thinking of using saran wrap or something similar.

I stuck one of those PDA screen protectors on the screen of my 276. It's just a piece of film that sticks on. The one for my iPAQ 5500 happened to be close enough in size.

Your are worrying over nothing and wasting your time trying to protect a Garmin GPS from dirts sand and mud---------it needs no protection------I have drug my Garmins thru the deserts of Arizona---sand and mud of Mexico---snow and sleet of the Divide---and torrential downpours--------it still looks and works like new. Been doing this for many years.

Thanks, BigDog. That makes me feel a lot better about the need to protect my investment.

Same here. It's almost bullet proof. Mounted my 176c on my KDX, which landed upside down, several times I might add, and it kept on tickin'! Have over 30k miles on mine in all sorts of conditions! |

A Little Note for all concerning GPS reception.....Standard 12 channel GPS reception is very old technology and can be off up to 160 feet, and all but a select few offer only this way of reception. It will crap out under most tree cover and tight canyons. The new technology is SiRFlll chipset. I have a gps receiver using SiRFlll, and in the basement of our house it locks on in 5 minutes. I mean in the room under all the overburden with no windows. Outside it locks on anywhere in less than 15 seconds and about 1 minute under very dense tree cover. I have never lost signal outdoors and it has an error of only 3 feet and slightly worse in tree cover.
If you can, look for GPS's with SiRFlll chipset technology. |

The 276C, and my 278, are based on stone-age GPS technology. These are marine units and out on the open sea they work fine. But among high trees reception is often an issue. Very important to keep the antenna pointed EXACTLY uppwards. Not leaning more than 15 degrees in any direction. The only alternative I can see to my 278 would be a 60CX. Better reception but less map detail. My choice still is the 276C or 278 since map detail during 99% of the ride is better than poor map detail during 100% of the ride.

Never used a 276c but I highly doubt the refresh rate is better than the 60Cx. Have you compared both?
