Aioi Bridge, Hiroshima

The distinctive T-shaped Aioi Bridge was the aiming point of B-29 Enola Gay.
It's right beside the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

GRN Bridging

On the Great Ride North we, by necessity, hit quite a few bridges. Here are a few.

I-5 over Lake Shasta.

Portland Oregon has bridges galore

and these were the ugly ones.

One of the Yukon River bridges,

south of Dawson City. At least it had a concrete deck.

Bridge over the Tanana River

South of Fairbanks. First grand glimpse of the Alaska Pipeline. There are more.

Speaking of the Yukon River

(seen here before, but not through my windshield)
Looking back

You can actually get a sense of the 6% or more grade that this thing has on it.
And finally, of Bridge and Bike

Couple more.
This nasty one at Teslin.

Steel grated and long. No, not Mack-in-nack Bridge long but longe enough. I like it more now that I made it over. This one in the rain.
This one, same bridge at Teslin, another time, and into the sunset.

And one more famous one on the Alcan

Slim's Bridge at Kluane Lake. Named after a miner's donkey who fell in the river there and drowned.
Won't be crossing it next year. Sad really.
We went a little Bridge Mad on the GRN. There were hundreds of them and we are thankful for everyone....except maybe that Teslin one. Maybe woulda gone around that one if given the choice.

Today at Multnomah Falls, Oregon:

It is a footbridge, so I couldn't have the bike in the pic.

Vitim River Bridge, Siberia

Better than a photo - a video! And what a bridge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJqDyrZfJpI

It is the Vitim Bridge that we crossed with motorbikes in the opposite direction a couple of days before these Poles, whom we met the day before coming the other way. Our SatNavs recorded it as 700m - almost half a mile of sheer hell.

Choosing not to ride across, we walked the bikes over knowing if they fell one way they went into the fast flowing icy river 40-50 feet below and if it fell the other way we went into it!

I was last and half way across got caught for 20 minutes in a violent thunder and hail storm. I just lay across the bike on its side stand praying, with winds in all directions gusting up to 80mph. The rail bridge to the right got struck by lightening twice and at times I could not see even as far as the water below - certainly not my two trusted (?) friends who were sheltering under the bridge having crossed it in the dry wondereing if they would ever see me again. I mean it!

When the storm abated and I continued, frozen, miserable and scared, the loose, old rail sleepers of the surface were then VERY slippery.

This is on the old carriage road. For common folk, no motor vehicles are allowed on this part of the road. So, I crossed it on a pedal bike.
