drawing Routes on Garmin Worldmap base map?

Does anyone know how to modify the ".img" map files in Garmin Worldmap? Since Worldmap is the only software useable in the Streetpilot that covers the Balkan countries that I plan to ride through this year, but it won't autoroute (it only makes strait point to point routes) I want to draw my route on the ".img" map files and then load them to the SP III.

I have found many sorces for creating your own GPS-loadable maps from scanned paper maps but that is way beyond what I need. I just want to make a copy of the existing Worldmap files and draw my route on them.

Anyone know of such a graphic application that will let me fiddle with my World(map)?

Thanks,

'munkie

Not exactly what you wish, but starting here, you may get leads to what you wish or you can make do with this:

routing

Look on the web for freeware called G7towin. I can send you a copy but I think there are different versions available.

This software allows you to design a route using waypoints and then upload that route to your GPS.

It takes some getting used to to work with the product but I've even been able to use it with a Garmin 2620 and am happy with the results. I design route segments rather than entire trips that way I can mix and match.

Hope this helps.

RBikerT, I found and loaded G7towin but haven't really delved into it yet. I'll take another look.

BurnieM,
I do have Mapsource and do just what you suggested when travelling in areas where I use European CN. The problem is that in the Balkans I have to use Worldmap and it does not support autorouting (which follows the roads exactly).
