Darn, I thought you could explain it to me.

Okay, here's one clue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat...porting_System

"Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is an amateur radio-based system for real time tactical digital communications of information of immediate value in the local area.[1] In addition, all such data is ingested into the APRS Internet system (APRS-IS) and distributed globally for ubiquitous and immediate access. Along with messages, alerts, announcements and bulletins, the most visible aspect of APRS is its map display. Anyone may place any object or information on his or her map, and it is distributed to all maps of all users in the local RF network or monitoring the area via the Internet. Any station, radio or object that has an attached GPS is automatically tracked. Other prominent map features are weather stations, alerts and objects and other map-related amateur radio volunteer activities including Search and Rescue and signal direction finding."

This other setup explains a little more of it. http://www.gpscentral.ca/photos8.html

so the montana can do all this yet garmin thinks that it is a handheld, hiking gps.I assume this is why they only allow 50 via points instead of the 10000 for a nuvi(/zumo?).In my seaches for motorcycle gps the montana never appears

wow
I think the subject needs its own thread so I started one. GPS, APRS and HAM Radio

I don't think this is really specific to the Montana, though I don't think other models work quite as well as the Montana on the Rugged Mount at this kind of thing.

As I suspected, there's a long list of gps units which can be used with APRS.

Here's a list on eHam.net.

I searched this thread and a few other places. The Montana manual does not contain the word "detour". Am I correct that when following a route with the Montana, that there is no provision for adding the kind of distance or street detour that some of the more street-oriented GPS units allow?

I'm new to he 650t, i'm wondering if there is a way to get the 3D mode less pixelated..... I tried setting to "most detail"..... no change. I've tried searching for this topic and had no luck.

What map, and what zoom level are you trying to use the 3D mode with? Must admit, I never use 3D mode, so I'd have to try it to see.

I've used the topo it came with and city nav that I loaded, same result. I think that's jus the way it is..... It's neat to view, but I like the normal view better.

I use Track Up most of the time; Stephanie swears by North Up.

Track up when moving: North up when stopped and in need of studying the map. YMMV
