March 10. Quito to Otavalo

After visiting the doctor and getting some Antibiotics ..... it has taken a few days but I am certainly on the rebound. Normally I am a healthy guy. Had food poisoning in Mexico (just ask Sam :) and this is the only other medical issue I have had. I took the safe path, and got checked out as I was feeling pretty bad, and was concerned that it might be something worse.... so was glad that it was not, and I am on the mend. Took some days resting in bed, reading and sleeping.

Thanks to James I have some photos of myself during my trip.

Saturday we decided to ride up to Otavalo to the Saturday market. It was a two hour ride north. Have to say I was fairly tired on the ride up, but really glad we did the ride It is an interesting market with lots of indigenous peoples in colorful and interesting dress.

The market was typical in that it had lots of produce for sale.

Loved the hats the people were wearing.

Lots of beans to choose from as they were "shucking" them right there.

James using my camera as he captures this woman eating a piece of watermelon.

James photo...

We both were laughing as we tower over everyone in the market. James took this photo ...... Can you spot Radioman?

This woman had a large basket on her head... Amazing to see how she could move around with ease.

Family in a bicycle cart... Riding through the crowds.

And there was street music...

Saw this guy hauling a big sack of produce.... Have seen this all along the trip.

Then we moved onto the "food court"

It's all normal here.

And all kinds of beans for sale.

Loved the way they stacked the Tomato's to sell them.

This is a great photo of the mother and daughter..... James took the shot as I engaged with Mom and the little girl. It took awhile to get her to smile..... but she did!

Back at the bikes....

and when we arrived back in quito ..... We found a Vegetarian restaurant to eat in. Not to worry I am not just eating pizza those tend to be the photos with other people. Had a big Mango/Banana fresh blended drink and nice fresh burrito.

We had a major downpour on the ride back into Quito....... And again as we had lunch! But was a good day riding and exploring

Still a bit worn out by the illness, but needed to get out for most of the day! Rested after we returned !!

I sure am glad to hear your now on the rebound, and you've settled into a good pace of just taking it all in. I assume James has no timeline to keep which works out good.

I am really loving the pictures and story telling...

So, do you know exactly what was wrong with you? no food poisoning I assume. Bad Mangos

Cool2

You my friend are putting some serious mileage on the bikes!

Glad to hear you are feeling better, great photos of the market. I love going to local markets when I travel, gives good insight as to what life is really like.

Be safe, get healthy!

Plans are changing.........

MY TRIP PLANS ARE CHANGING SO I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD POST THIS UP..........

I started my ride on June 4th with a ride to the Oregon coast with Camogreg (and the start of his cross country ride!) I am now on my 9th month on the road (about 38,000 miles), 6 months of which have been outside the US.

Had a plan when I left, but always knew that it would change as I progressed. That is what my expectation has always been.

I slowed down my ride in South America, because I needed more time to explore and have enjoyed 2 months in Colombia and 5 weeks in Ecuador. In doing so, it has substantially changed the timing of getting to Ushaia in Argentina, which will be heading into winter soon. That means I now have until November/December/January to ride to the end of the road.

To share a bit more of my story, and motivation to my change of plans.

Years ago, Chanderjeet traveled to the US with sponsorship from the generous contributions of time, hospitality and money of many advriders, it was called the International Friendship Ride! I had the pleasure of meeting CJ, and a brief ride out to the Oregon coast for lunch before Camogreg escorted him further south. I told him then, that I planned to come ride in the India and specifically the Himalayas, after reading his amazing ride reports and seeing his photos! Thanks CJ for the inspiration!

Seeing sights like this....

Here is his thread about his ride in the USA.

Here is my new plan:

End of March I have a friend flying down from Oregon to go to the Galapagos Islands for a 6 day cruise, and some days exploring this unique place. Then I will fly back to Oregon so that I can start the Visa process for India, get my taxes done (yup, I am a responsible US citizen), handle a few other issues, and then mid May (depending on several factors) fly to India buy or rent a bike for couple months depending on how all my plans go. Then return to Ecuador to pick up my bike and continue exploring Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Possibly Brazil…..

That is my new plan…. which is now set in place. Tickets purchased back to the US, arrangements made to store my bike securely in Ecuador and a slightly new direction!! (of course it is open to change ……as always when on a great adventure!)

Let the Ride Continue!!

I was about to ask what you were thinking schedule wise. I mean, it is going to get cold in Ushuaia soon.

What the heck. This is perfect! You and CJ are going to have a blast!

Yo James - good to hear you're safe and sound too. I picked up the S100 a couple of months ago...wish I had it in Alaska. Awesome pix, love the built-in tilt effect, forget the HDR mode, keep an eye on the battery. Only takes 200 shutters before recharge is needed. The video is nice too, chews up storage quickly. Contour or GoPro is better for on the move angles.

Mark - I've been lurking here too, glad you're rebounding from fever. The new itinerary sounds great, I'll be following you here when you're able to post...safe travels! We're thinking of Patagonia at the end of the year, perhaps we'll meet up.

Cheers from Seattle.

Personally, I think it'd be really cool to go buy a bike in India, ride it all over the subcontinent, then ship it back home. How many times do you get the chance to say, "Yeah, that's my souvenir from my trip to India." and then fire it up and ride down the street.
