How long did you spend in Broome? In my "armchair" adventuring I'd always dreampt of visiting Broome. The sky, beach and water look magnificent.

Broome to Port Hedland 600KM.

Port Hedland is a major port fro shipping Iron Ore

Continuing to ride down the western coast. This stretch is just inland of the coast and not much to see. The weather is great and having a good ride!

As we ride into Port Hedland they have a huge Salt mine. They flood the area in pools and then harvest the salt for use all over the world.

We rolled into this mining town and the acccommodation was very full. We ended up in the Caravan park in a two bedroom unit.

It was race day (horse) in Port Hedland, so the town was busy. As we took a taxi into town, they had a Police stop to check for Alcohol. We arrived at a local hotel to have dinner. And it was great that Rick and Dawn came down to join us for dinner. Rick contacted me about a place to stay, And was so glad to have time to chat with them about so many really important issues in the area. Still digesting the conversation! Thanks so much Rick and Dawn!! We all enjoyed the evening!

This area is big on mining. The red earth is amazing color

and it gets onto everything. My boots started to change color

As we rode out of town, there were several large building being moved. The truck and building covered the whole road, so everyone needed to pull over.

And lots more road trains loaded with Iron Ore.

When passing you need to really get on the throttle

and yes, with all the road trains..... There is tyre debris along the roads

We rode inland to see Karijini National Park

On the way the hills grew, and buttes looked very old.

Dales Gorge

Diana capturing the Desert flowers.

You might look at her blog for her take on the desert! http://www.pearlson2wheels.blogspot.com.au

The red earth is really striking!

We arrived into Tom Price and will do a Mine tour this morning!

Cheers!

Tom Price is an Iron Ore mining town. They have been digging up Iron ore since the 50's and the equipment they use to do the work is huge.

We signed up for a morning Mine tour to go take a look at one of Rio Tino's mines.

Safety in the mine is very serious. Hardhats and closed toe boots, and seat belts a must on the tour!

The tour gave lots of facts on the amount of Iron ore that is being mined, how it is done, the equipment that is being used.

Huge amount of earth that has been removed.

Trucking the Iron ore around to the processing plant.

All the grades of ore are kept separate, and processed.

and moved around with diggers, conveyer belts and loading equipment onto trains cars or Road trains.

Was interesting tour as we demand more and more raw materials to produce products around the world. All this ore is shipped overseas to be made into steel.

Of course as a guy, seeing huge equipment is amazing.

Then back on the road and riding west to the coast.

on the long stretches of road, there is lots of roadkill of all kinds, but have seen a great deal of Cattle dead along the road, since we have been out west.

Rode until the sun went down in order to arrive in Exmouth.

Rio Tinto Utah

Mark,

Rio Tinto has a huge operation here in Utah. At one time it was the world's biggest open pit copper mine. Huge slide earlier this year. Here is linky; http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...slide.html.csp

Mark,
Are still riding with your GSA friends? It is a good idea to have company in outback Australia. Take care with the early morning and evening riding, plenty of wildlife out there.

Cheers

When I saw this shot, couldnt figure why you appeared to be heading North.

Then looked at your Spotwalla page and it all made sense

Keep up the good work. Very much enjoying your trip.

Exmouth

Arrived the coastal town of Exmouth, which is home of the Ningaloo Reef marine park. Took Thursday off to get a Scuba trip set up and Whale Shark snorkling trip. Nothing left to do but some laundry and sit at the pool!

We road up to the Lighthouse to watch Sunset. We could see many Humback whales just offshore breeching!

It was the last evening with Dick and Diana as they will continue riding on south as they have plans to ride all the way back to Sydney before shipping back to NZ. Until we meet again my Friends !

Friday I was up early to get to my Scuba trip out to the Ningaloo Reef.

Was looking forward to being back in the ocean to explore a bit!

Ningaloo Reef was great! Makes me want to jump!!

We had some good dives with lots of fish!! Including a leopard Shark and sea snakes.

The next day, I had signed up to go out and snorkle with the Whale Sharks
It is the end of the season and we had to get outside the reef and out into open water for 25 miles. But we had a great chance to snorkle with the Whale Sharks

This one is about 6 meters in length.

Happy Snorklers !

On the way back, we spotted humpback whales!

Everyone on the boat was really excited about the trip and seeing these amazing fish! Took Sunday off from riding to relax and prepare to ride south.

Hi Mark good to see you got to swim with the whale sharks. You are traveling through some of the best of Australia and coming up to my favorite city Perth. You are also showing with a little research you can ride the world without being in rain all the time. Enjoy the rest of your time in Australia.

Radioman,
Its great to be alive, live in Australia and follow Radioman RTW. Thanks for the adventure.

I'll say a prayer you stay safe in Australia and pull out the big guns for you in South Africa with a decad of the rosary each day for a week.

Cheers
