Hey Mark,
I've loosely followed your trip and have enjoyed it immensely. We were down in Durango a couple years ago when you and Idahosam were there and a member of our group (Schizzman) had lunch with y'all. Hard to believe you've been on the road almost constantly since then. Much Respect and best wishes in your future endeavors. Saludos, JIm

Mark - Congrats on the trip and I am sure you are looking forward to the "next chapter".

Thanks so much for all the enjoyment you have provided me and many others with your great pictures and words! and thanks for being such a great ambassador for motorcyclists everywhere.

It s hard to believe that its been over 2 years! Shortly after you started your trip, I quit thinking about getting my motorcycle endorsement and did it. Not too long after that I found ADVrider and your report is the first report I subscribed to. Since then you have been around the world and I have been on several trips around the east cost, encouraged by trips like yours and the many other great reports here.

Thanks again and good luck on your next chapter!

Well, I certainly thank you for taking us along on your journey, I've enjoyed it immensely. Maybe I'll get lucky and see you in the states sometime, but if not its been a real pleasure to get to know you.

Hi Mark!

Wow, you've really covered some ground since we crossed paths in Mexico. And you've done so with a style and grace that is quite admirable. I'll reread your RR before I start my own run in a few years, ojala que si.

God bless you,

JD

P.S.: there's a spare bedroom and garage space for you here should you ever pass this way. And BBQ.

Mark, as many others have said, THANKS!! and not just for the ride report, but for sharing "the rest of the story".

If your path north brings you this way, the door is always open for you.
Hope to see you again somewhere along the way, Jan

Au Contraire, Mark, you speak just enough to make a very entertaining Ride Review... South Africa looks WONDEFUL!

Thanks for sharing your journey and helping us refine our bucket list just a little further!

Oh, and remember, it is still cool and wet in the PNW! Cheers, Mark!

Thanks Mark

Another resounding thank you and truly inspiring ride. Not just the ground covered but the attitude and style that you did it all with. A true ambassador for the USA as we do not always have the best reputation globally.

Also an even bigger thanks for the information and assistance that you provide to other riders. I PM'd Mark several times for my small (in comparison) ride through Central and parts of South America. He is a wealth of knowledge and always willing to lend what help he can. Helped me take the leap and now planning on a bigger ride to finish SA in 10 months.

I was so inspired I even crashed in a similar area on the same bike just to try and be like Radioman.

I still keep in touch with Jose of BMW Guat and he comes to the states some on BMW's dime. He was just in OR this summer.

Thanks again Mark.

Not sure how I will do after basically 4 summers in a row while on the road. (had winter in Australia but it was like PNW summer

The bike might just turn around and head south for the winter

Garden Route

After a great weekend in the Cederberg, it was off to ride the famous "Garden Route" which is along the coastline! Had a nice gravel route worked out by David... with a couple mountain passes!

I stayed at the Mountain View B&B in Ladismith which is actually on Route 62.

http://www.ladismithmountainview.co.za

As I rolled up, Heinrich and Marianne had some friends over having a Braai. They got me sorted in the room, then insisted that I have some Braai with them, and a cold beer So friendly. Turns out Jan (Heinrichs brother has a 1150GSA) and so we chat about the trip. Then Jan and Jannie offer me a place to stay in Mossel Bay which is down on the garden route. Heinrich and Marianne encouraged me to stay with them....... So glad I did!

I stopped at the Hot springs at Calitzdorp for a nice soak, then onto Mossel Bay!

had a nice water crossing to get there.

Then Across the mountains to the coast. But lots of Ostrich farms along the way

I arrived at Jan and Jannie's Laundry Business, in the afternoon. Jan showed me the way to their home, and then they finished up business. as I got settled into their beautiful home!

Then I was in for a treat as Jan fired up the Braai.

and cooked up the local fish called Snoek

Had a great evening talking about South Africa, and many other topics!

Jan's GSA

Thanks so much Jan and Jannie Another amazing experience with the friendly people of South Africa!!

But time is short and I needed to keep moving. Headed off to Port Elizabeth to meet up with ADV rider Bernard who contacted me months ago to welcome me to SA.

Through George and taking backroads.

Took the mountain route out of Knysna back up to Route 62.

Nice winding mountain pass

Been to Angie's G Spot

Beautiful scenery!

As I arrived Port Elizabeth, I needed to stop and pick up my Rewound stator at Roger Steele's! My GPS was not too good, and I was along the road, and "jupiter" from Wild dogs see me and stops to help. I tell him the address, and then show him my phone.... He says" oh, your looking for Roger..... follow me.... Takes me right to Rogers house. Very cool!

Thanks "jupiter" on Wild dogs!

Then I ride over to meet Bernard, and we went out for a great dinner along the ocean! After getting my bike settled into the garage!

Bernard had restored thgis old classic. Very cool

Enjoying the last bit of time on the road!!
