Having grown up, lived and ridden in the area (i.e. Pontiac, Bloomington and Normal) eons ago, I have greatly enjoyed this thread and your pictures.

Been checking this thread occasionally, hoping for new posts. When I go gravel road riding I enjoy taking a break on old bridges. Great topic!

Mark,
I am sure there are a few old steel bridges i have missed here in central illinois, but i have photographed most of them. I am just going to have to throw the camping gear on the klr and do some weekend photo shoots in the counties further away.

Shady Rest Bridge

I searched for this bridge twice before, but was unable to locate it. Today i was riding in Piatt County when my Garman notified me that I was close to this bridge. I decided to look again, and found a gravel lane off the road i had not noticed before. At the end of the lane was a barracade with a narrow foot trail beyond it. I got off my KLR and headed into the timber. Less than 10 minuets later I found this.

Pratt through truss bridge over Sangamon River on the Heartland Pathways, a rail trail converted from the former Illinois Central rail line
