Are you able to check and see fuel in the float bowl when YOU stall? Next time it wont start, try just opening the fuel cap... untwist it and let the air into the tank. I had a problem with my harley dying at various times. I thought it was fuel related. turns out I had replaced one side of the tanks gas cap, cuz the old cap failed me at emissions. Anyway, the vacuum in the tank would let the fuel drop. Your problem reminds me of this, as when you sit a long time it starts. All that other stuff may be a red herring.. as it was for me, when really it was that the vacuum would leave the tank over time and all the other stuff I was doing seemed to work cuz it would "start" I just put my old cap back on and it's been good ever since.
Just cuz my bike is shiny, doesn't mean that I'm a hiny

So far, so good...

The new stator/pickup coil assembly went on, worked, and scoot's been running like a top all day. The guys made it to Canada and are camping for the night so I went ahead and updated the map...,9.832764&z=7

Love it, it's about being out there; not what you're out there on.

Back stateside...

They camped the last couple nights, and reached Polson this morning in time for breakfast. I think they're trying to beat some of the rain as they head back south on the 93.

Day 8
June 3, 2011
Going nowhere.

Day 8. F*** you.

Scooter started last night. Not this morning. All signs point to pickup coil. Several borrowed pullers later, the f-ing flywheel is off. Call to Boise saying "send it"! Getting my lips ripped off a bit over the price, but what choice?

Postbote stops by with some consolation beer.

Part is supposed to be here by noon tomorrow. Hope this works.

Be safe all. Another night in Kalispell.

Day 9
June 4, 2011

Greetings and good morning. Ish. Just for the record, Saturday morning overnight delivery from Boise is Kalispell is expensive. And when they say it will be there by 10, they mean whenever the driver gets to it. So we wait. And go across the street for breakfast. Where Dean, amongst his breakfast fare, is served Franken-buscuit:

Now, our package arrives promptly at 12:17. And in it is a brand new stator (which we don't really need) and pickup coil (which we desperately need) assembly. Drop the thing in. Put the flywheel back on. Push the button. BAM! We're in business!

Start it several more times during the reassembly process to verify that it's actually working. All seems good. Time to pack up a GO! By the way, no crappy rainy day today. I sort of wonder if the gods were keeping us here so that our ride north was better......

Ok. Lets try this! We go busting on north out of town heading to Eureka, and imminently Canada. I'm hoping that, unlike Mrsmilk has been joking, my scooter isn't just afraid of Canada. We make it back to the exact spot we were when failure happened the other day. This gas station:

That spot. Right there. Thats where it sat and wouldn't start working again:

But she ran all lovely. We made our way north, and couldn't have had a better travelling day.

Oh, hello there Eureka...

Oh! Wait....whats that? Just up ahead there? No....can't be. We were supposed to fail before we made it this far......hmmmm....we're so close....

Hello there. Yes sir. Nope, no weapons. No food stuffs. I'm from Phoenix....yes I really did ride this all the way here....only about 55 MPH....yeah....getting 80 sir....we'll be leaving probably tomorrow afternoon or Monday mornings.....thank you very too.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. Thats right. We made it. We. Are. In. Canada!!!!!!

Now, given that our ride today didn't start until about 2 PM, we made the decision to try and make it to Radian Hot Springs for the night. Rather attainable, given how late the sun sets up here. And we're off!!

The change is almost instantaneous. We ride for a while, and I try to put my finger on it.

It goes beyond the fact that the roads are simply better here.

Now this is kinda nice:

And it goes beyond the fact that it is cleaner here. Though it is. I see nary a bit of trash anywhere on the roads.

You know what it is. It seems that, although there are people living here, they don't seem to .....infect the land like we do. I don't know if that states it quite right, but thats the phrase in my head.

Dean's phone frequently seems to confuse him:

So we rode a little bleary eyed into Radian Hot Springs. Decided to follow the 93 a little ways into the park...took a look at the springs....then pulled over to the side and found a camping spot. It was nice we got there late enough that the guard booth was closed and we didn't have to pay to get in. And I suspect we weren't supposed to camp in there....but shhhhh!....I won't tell if you won't.

Good night all.

Be safe.

Day 10
June 5, 2011

Banff National Park to Kalispell
approx 340 miles, I think.

AAAARGh!!!! So sorry to be remiss. I didn't get a picture yesterday of Dean pissing somewhere beautiful! Alas, and alack....I shall make amends:

So, we woke up today after camping here in Banff National Park. Like I said, don't think we were supposed to, but we are clean fella's. We carried out all of our trash. We left no sign of us being there. So's the morning.

Got to sleep listening to this:

That was lovely.

Now, lets see what this area looks like in the daytime. I've heard it's supposed to be...well....Ok-ish as far as scenery.

Oh look! A bear! I didn't try to get any closer for a it's kinda touristy.

Dear Lord!!! Everytime we stop, I just have to hold up the camera and shoot. Any direction. Its amazing.

I think maybe Dean's cell phone was confusing him again?

Mrsmilk likes ducks. And what have we here?

Dean got us some freshly filtered mountain water:

Yup. Just hold up the camera and shoot. You can't screw this up.

Fuel supplies were running low, and we really needed to be heading south again soon. So this became our turn around point.

Man. 10.5 days of ridiculousness, on a 125 cc and 150 cc scooter. And we are here!!!!! Whew.

Obligatory touristy shot:

So 65 miles in, and 75 miles back out. There's more pics, but I won't bore you with them here.

We got back out of the park and stopped for FOOD and COFFEE. The place ended up being amazing. I am sorry for my lack of food porn on this ride report, but, oh look...... here's some now:

(yeah hon, it's salmon benedict. And it was awesome.)

So it was again about 2 PM by the time we started south from Radian Hot Springs. We were trying to make tracks, so not a lot of photos...well...lets see what i got. Oh wait! Just to make up for a few days of missing this special feature, you get a 2 for 1:

Dean pissing somewhere beautiful

On the way south...

Dash across the border and down to Kalispell. Oh dear I didn't want another night here....but it works for our route home. Turn on our phones, which have been off for 2 days trying to not get 1000 bucks in roaming charges....answer 400 texts, voicemails, and emails. Get a lovely (and eventually free, as the proprieter never came to collect money) campground, and SLEEP.

By the way, I'm not sure which guy it was that said "Nah! We don't wanna go up through Nevada. It will be boring. Utah will be much more interesting". And then subjected us to multiple days of snow and mountain passes and craziness. But if I find out who, I'm gonna kick his ass. I think his name starts with an M.

Suffice to say, we will be going home the shorter, and more boring, route through Nevada.

Thanks for watching all....will try to post more timely now that we are in the states again.

Equal to all of you of roads and good luck! - krokodil al-kashi

“We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer.” —”Extreme Behavior in Aspen,” February 3, 2003

I'm not sure which is more amazing...

The fact that you made it all the way into Canada, or the fact that Dean only had to go 4x the whole way up there.

Sorry you have to dis my home state on the way back.
Maybe next time you should try the trip on snowmobiles instead...
