BMW GS meeting 2012, Finland

Another great BMW GS meeting with a lots of fun, great riding and good talks '

I wanted to share with other adventure riders the great weekend I just experienced in Summassaari, Finland on another BMW GS meeting. A typical Finnish biker meeting is about getting drunk, having fun and listen to some rock band. This GS meeting is about having fun, riding on gravel roads or through the forest, meeting people and drinking some booz (attributes in order of importance :-) )

This year, there were guests from Norway and Germany. In previous years, the event also attracted folks from Russia and Scotland.

Stay tuned for more as I am now learning how to post stuff to the forum

Getting started

We started our ride at Hiidenvesi - a perfect stop for a break. From there we drove small streets via Pusula, Tammela to Tampere in order to meet another friend. At first we took some vegan fast food at Vegemesta.

Trying to find the "good" roads from Tampere to Summasaari

Riding on small roads is sometimes a challenge, so we had a few stops to check which way to take.

Wooden church in Petäjävesi

Typically I am not keen to visit churches, however this one is pretty cool. All made out of wood. Its even a part of UNESCO World Heritage. Petäjävesi Old Church

The day before the riding

My Linux laptop got stuck - well now its fixed and I can continue here

This year the meeting as again at Summasaari

The GS meeting becomes more and more popular and look at that crowd for such a meeting - there is no band playing, no show-girls - its all about riding gravel roads and meeting others who like it as well...

Pekka did a great in organizing the groups ... and here is an overview. So everybody needs to find their group, typically based on what everybody wanted i.e. green/blue/red/black route.

For those who did not like that there was an "alternative program"

The proposed routes by the routemaster

And here is Pekka with his welcome speech ... - dry and to the point

And the crowd is listening ...

And the foreign guests got a nice "puukko" as souvenir

Are you sure you wanna take the red route???

Riding day - getting started

The morning was a little chaotic when everybody tried to find their group - there were 17 groups (each 5-7 persons) - you might imagine ...

Some impressions from team Blue 1

The roads we took and the speed was very comfortable. Nothing to stress about, no driving at the limits - peaceful ...

THESE ARE THE SIGNS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!!!

Surprise

What a surprise - This is Esa and me riding in the same group and only in the end realizing that he is the one who sold his V-Strom to my wife. THE V-Strom which will now go around the world on our big adventure (s. www.sauerkraut-tofuwurst.blogspot.com)

Finland is SMALL!

Nor that looks cool. Would you maybe have some future dates? I know a few nutters here in the UK which I could easily convince that it was their idea in the first place to come over and have a look
If you would maybe have a link or something like that
Cheers

Sure - very simple: www.bmwgsmeeting.com

typically the meeting is in the second weekend in June. The place is also pretty constant, since in this area there are so many different gravelroads. I guess Pekka updates the website in spring time.

There is also a Norwegian GS meeting in September - never been there, so cannot say how it is there.
