How to FIND great routes / scenic detours

1) Word of mouth, locals, other riders

2) GreatestRoads smartphone app. Shows you scenic and fun rides near where you're at.

GR sent us out to Jalama Beach, south of Lompoc CA. Wow, what a fun road!

3) Motorcycleroads.com I just WISH this one was also an app; its a website. I've contributed a half dozen routes in MY area -- SW Colorado, N New Mexico.

4) Google Maps --check "AVOID HIGHWAYS"

5) Green dotted "Scenic Roads" in Atlas

6) __________________________________

For me the most important thing is the APPROACHES to major metropolitan areas. There are ALWAYS nicer ways in and out of town, back routes the locals use. Almost as if you need a "pilot" to guide you in, and keep you off the superslabs.

Kentucky's DOT has a "Maps" page with an application that highlights gravel & dirt roads.

6) Old mining areas.

7) Just the name of the road itself.

I will have to think about cutting the sandwich.

For the "Common" scenic routes.....browse some of these channels once in a while. See what episodes are coming up as they often do traveling segments to different areas and places to see. Set the DVR and watch.

* National Geographic

* Discovery Channels

Etc.

Magazines / internet:

http://travel.nationalgeographic.com...ives-traveler/

* AAA "Going Places" magazine. Free if you're a member

* If/when traveling by plane, grab the Delta SKY, American Airlines, etc. magazine. It's a hit or miss but they have some pretty good articles and or scenic routes from time to time.

GOOGLE is your friend (Example):

Get a DeLorme atlas and look for roads that follow rivers or streams. Elevation change with twisties = F-U-N.

I avoid major metropolitan areas and would never plan a trip that included going anywhere near one.

My ideal stop is a town with a couple of motels, restaurants, and gas stations and is not dry.

I get lots of ride ideas from Ride Reports.

I use dualsportmaps.com and GPSXchange.com to get GPS tracks for rides.

Google earth with photos turned on, zoom in on a route or track. If there's something really cool to see chances are someone has taken a pic and linked it.
