In 1734, John Mills acquired, from Virginia Lieutenant Governor Gooch, 1315 acres of land near the southernmost gap in North Mountain used as a crossing point by settlers traveling the old Pack Horse Road, a former Indian trail from Shepherdstown to Romney. Below the gap, Gerrardstown was settled on the same land grant.

During the French and Indian War, native tribesmen crossed the gap from the west and massacred local families in Gerrardstown.

Around 1769, John Mills Jr. opened and operated a tavern frequented by travelers at the gap.
Today’s overlook at the crossroads is an irresistible stop to appreciate the panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley to the east including farmland and orchards. Red bud, apple white and peach pink dominate the color scheme in spring. At night, it’s the city lights of Martinsburg. Continue along the trail to the west to cross the lush and still sparsely settled Back Creek Valley.
Grab

It was a fun ride on my newly acquired WR250R from Charles Town to Gerrardstown. I ride this road occasionally and am familiar with the spot. Lucky was undisturbed.

Tag

So off we went stopping by my house to swap out bikes. We continued west. This should be a easy spot to figure out but if you need a clue I took a few more revealing pictures. I figured I would introduce myself with a cheesy picture. Feel free to do the same. :)

Grab and tag (08-27-11)

Okay i guess i was a little greedy woke up this morning hurricane not affecting us much at all and since i could not make it to CH III campout...and everyone in the house still asleep... thought i would go ahead and grab the tag, since i forgot the little prize that i was going to place the last tag i placed.

Tag: Old Hill Top Hotel overlook, Harpers Ferry at the end of East Ridge Street. Too bad place went out of business and is really run down.

This buzzard just seemed to be hanging out, not sure where his friends were... maybe he is on the look out while the rest are eating...

Tag: Again didnt take it as far as i would have liked too... yeah I sound like a broken record:

The tag is off the road that the previous tag intersected with (road 2 digits totaling 9) heading south west toward one of the tags (illegal) boundaries... The road is gravel then no gravel then dirt.... (UPDATE) just did some looking on the internet... and was suprised to see that this Sept. 23-25 these woods will be the place of an re-inactment - not open to the public... ???
Rutherford Rangers is proud to invite you to participate in the second annual “Invasion of the Valley of Virginia” tactical, which commemorates a time in history Col. Washington called the “Indian Outrages.” This tactical will be for participants only, the public is not invited. The tactical will be held on 757 acres of heavily wooded land along the historic Pack Horse Road. The Pack Horse Road was used by settlers, soldiers and others to move through the area to points West and South. This area of Berkeley County, WV saw many Indian raids during this period of colonial history. The plan is to have a free flowing engagement where anything could happen at any time. Our goal is to make this tactical as real as possible. We are planning on having an actual mule train with mule skinners bringing supplies to the colonial forces.
then road is blocked by a gate and to the right of it is the Tuscarora Trail

Lucky a little off the road and down to a hikers trail (right of the gate)...see little white sign...go to sign.

See the double tree to the right of sign, which is actually an equestrian and hiker trail...but i dont think iron horses are allowed...oh well... any way about 15 feet back with a limb between it. Lucky is hiding on the other side with a nice little prize.

now you see him now you dont.

You will know you have right tree when you see the stick with a deer vertabrae.

Do you mean you decided to go for him and didn't want to be bruced so you are telling us he's been taken to keep us from making the run this evening?? I'm not the moderator..but...IMHO its best not to say anything until you post the photo...don't worry about Brucing someone else...it's part of the game.
