Question Final drive oil mist

Hey all,

So I'm tackling the oil leaks on my old beast. Here's one I can't seem to get no matter what I try. Here's what it looks like after about 1000 km or running after cleaning it up.

And full sized image if anyone wants to look:

I've used new crush washers, and tightened it down as far as I feel comfortable, i.e. I don't want to strip it. I'm about to either make a cork washer or find an O-ring that will fit over the fill plug. I never have oil laying there, or dripping. It's just enough to gather the dirt and dust and I know it's there.

Any suggestions?

Little nicks or grooves on the mating surfaces? I think you may be able to find a nylon washer, most autoparts should have an assortment of drain plug washers, maybe one that fits there.

Find what is called a "stat-o-seal."It is a metal washer with a rubber ring built into the I.D.Probably
you can find it at a hydraulic supply, or sealing -gasket supply

Is it leaking from the filler or collecting mist from the breather due to a pocket of low pressure?
Does that area get extra dusty on a dirt road?
My bike is slow but the earth is patient.

I don't think it's coming out the vent. Not a sign of it there. When it's real cold though it can and does puke oil out of it though. That's not what's happening here though.

I'm not sure about the low pressure idea. It's rather specifically centred around the oil fill and not a speck anywhere else. Somewhat odd that.

I'll look for the various drain plug washers. The seating surface looks good to the naked eye. I've never noticed the oil level being down, except for the aforementioned cold weather vomiting.

As far as Snowbum's page, I have some articles bookmarked. I find it rather difficult to find anything in there! Information overload in spades!

Verify oil level is at the BOTTOM of the threads.

Sometimes overfilling of the shaft will make lube pass the pinion seal and overfill the rear drive. Keep topping up the shaft, more transfer to the rear drive.

Go at the seal surface with some 400 grit. Get a pristine matte surface. Same for the fill plug surface that mates with the seal. You can even do the same to the seal itself.

Lube is designed to flow into areas smaller than you can see with the eye. Amazing what can been seen with a 10X hand glass that is invisible to the eye. One of the top 10 tools in my bag of tricks.

I agree with DoktorT.

First make sure that the fill plug is sealing 100% and then make sure that youre not overfilling the rear drive.

I frequently polish the crush seal using some fine wet/dry paper lubed with a little WD-40 but the surface of the drive needs to be a clean and undamaged as you can get it.

Try that and report back.
