NE Oregon Backroad Snow Status

I'd appreciate if anyone can give current information on whether any of the following have opened yet:

- FR16 Seneca to Unity
- FR52 Ukiah to Granite
- FR39 Joseph to Halfway

Thanks,

- Mark

FS website says packed snow, it's pretty early yet for those roads. We had fresh snow at those elevations last week. If you are planning a trip soon PM me and I will run down a FS employee and get the latest info.

I'm heading to Whitney on Monday: FR51 is in the plans for the next day, FR16's on the list for Wednesday. Not counting on making it all the way through on either one, but you never know....

If you can ask the FS info source, it'll be a large help.

I'll post some pice after getting back next weekend or so.

Rode 52 last weekend, made it a little past Pearson guard station. Report from trail crew 5-26 is that 52 is open to big creek mile post 25 for 4X4, can't get into Winom or Big creek campgrounds. We can't remember being unable to get into Winom or Big Creek for Mem weekend. Still lots of snow this year.

Drove to La Grande 5-26 via i-84 new snow and snow on my way home as well!

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. For a trip in a week, sounds like I should assume all three are going to be still snowed in.

FR16 Unity to Seneca is clear sailing as of Saturday June 4th when I rode it.

Good to know! Just want to double check though... when you say FS16 Unity to Seneca, you're talking about this route? ---> http://ridewithgps.com/routes/447828

thanks again

Yes, the segment on your route from Seneca eastbound to intersect 26 S of Unity is FR16 and reported to be open. However, there are other segments of your route which are not snowfree yet (at least by last report of the forest service), like Granite to Ukiah.

Thanks Mark, I did see from earlier posts on this thread about the stretch to Granite and made these changes... (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/461979) again, thanks Mark!

Looks good, although I can't confirm the FR21 segment from Ukiah to Spray. This is gravel and unplowed, but it isn't terribly high either, so should be Okay. I did the "Winlock loop" from Service Creek to Spray this last weekend and didn't see any snow.

They're getting some seriously warm weather in the area now, so I suspect everything should be opening in the next couple weeks.

snow

Based on the view from this webcam here at Tollgate
http://www.tamarackinnbb.com/weather.htm
I think there is still lots of snow.

My rule of thumb has been, if there is snow visible from that camera, there is still lots of snow left. Once the snow piles melt, there is still snow in the trees but often the bikes can punch through the drifts on the road.

Quick Update:

- FR52 Ukiah to Granite - OPEN! Rode thru some of the nastiest wind, rain, hail, thunder and lightning this weekend: but she's open for business!

Just to clarify, unpaved gravel section is open, with delays, as paving continues through the summer.

As a sportbike rider, I thought others like myself would need to know this.

Dirt slingers, carry on.
