Slash 5 Revive
Picked up this r75/5 roller last winter. Local inmate Pokey66C23 was considerate enough to give me second dibs after he bolted at its sight.
![]() The bikes history is a hazy tale of Rhode Island baby boomers, procrastinating restorers and 20+ years in lonely corners. The engine refuses to budge and there are varieties of rust not known to science encasing the exterior. While I hate seeing beemers broken for their bits, I must say this bike makes me second guess that logic. Welp....the day she arrived. Like a homely stray dog confined to the porch. Fearful she might pee in my workshop. ![]() ![]() The engine badge fell off during unload. The owner was kind enough to find the knee pads for the tank, I didn't have the heart to tell him they were also rubbish. ![]() The PO doused the bike in a miracle juice so it's a bit baby oily. ![]() No, that's not a weed. ![]() Mufflers and springs look like they were made from Corten. ![]() ![]() The bike must have looked better 20 years ago, or Rhode Island has some pretty low standards. ![]() ![]() The gearbox kicks over with the clutch disengaged. ![]() Surprised I didn't find barnacles with rust like this. I could practically hear the seat decomposing. ![]() Warty fuel cap. If it looks this bad on the outside..... ![]() Yikes... it was still 1/4 full! Wish you could of smelled this.... I'll likely turn this tank into a mailbox. ![]() ![]() Toothpick needles. Unfortunately, the Elmer's glue was no match for the mighty tac. ![]() Clutch cable works surprisingly well and arm moves as it should. ![]() Can't wait to crack the treasure chest. ![]() I didn't notice any broken fins on either cylinder. ![]() Bummed about the wonky bucket and toothpicky speedo. The shape will need massaging, the ignition switch is kaput, some wires are singed, the harness has been molested and the chrome ring is munched. But the fuses were in good shape! ![]() Final drive is full, wheel spins and all drain/filler plugs moved with ease. ![]() Gearbox was full and the PO stuffed the engine with clean oil. ![]() Beauty and the least. ![]() I've hoarded a trove of /5 bits over the years, so that'll help with the project. Regardless, this requires a full restoration and I plan for the long term. Not entirely set on end objectives, but leaning towards a sportier /5. We'll see what evolves... nothing is sacred with this snot boxer.

She reminds me of my cousins sister, uh my other cousin. She was rode hard and put away wet one too many times and had a hard drug life, she is in about the same shape, but probably worth the trouble. She is a looker.

If you got it with title for nothing and not much more, you will be upsidedown real fast on a rebuild. The only way to diminish it's value further would involve a D9 Cat.

yeah…. I'm expecting a thorough walloping from this critter. Have the title, little invested, and a wife who insists I stay out of the house.
I measure the value more in experience and enjoyment….. let you know how that works out.

Teardown highlights and notable findings...
Removing the seat required my angle grinder.
![]() Mufflers and headers needed motivation, but eventually succumbed to my derogatory language. ![]() The header vomited this on my designer rug and Carhartts. ![]() Honestly, I was expecting much worse.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Intake ![]() Exhaust ![]() This was a surprise! ![]() ![]() Neato ISO oil cooler dipstick... had another thread on this: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=666779 ![]() My box runneth over.

How much did the PO pay you to take it off his hands?
![]() If anything, Old's Cool will have an enjoyable thread for the next...few years? Looking forward to the build! |
