I can only imagine how apathy for work must be setting in about now.

Last minute packing!

WOW - why is it that despite our best intentions to TAKE LESS, we still come up with more crap than will reasonably fit on a bike?

I keep finding "just one more thing" that I MUST take with me - like that envelope of cash I almost forgot - whoops!

Well the bike is almost packed (crappy iphone pic):

...and I'm still sitting here drinking coffee and trying to wake up!
Am I the only one that finishes packing for a trip this long on the morning of departure?

Well off to finish packing...

Dave

good luck!

looking forward to the reports!
travel safe.
I would sure like to see a "packing list" of before and a list of what you actually wanted and needed (used?) on the trip. I usually take too much stuff!

Day ONE is done!

UPDATED December 3rd 2011 to add Map and (hopefully) a video clip.

Well I made it to Key West without incident. It wasn't for a lack of trying, however, as the 4-wheelers were in fine form today.

Today's Ride: Land O Lakes, FL to Key West, FL
Click a spot/icon for date/time stamp and latitude/longitude

Short clip:

I'm not sure if I caught it on video but at one point I almost witnessed a head-on collision on E Tamiami Trail - some idiot just HAD to pass and BARELY got back into his lane before the oncoming traffic passed him...

It sure will be good to get out of this kind of traffic and get out west where it's a lot more open and less congested.

Now for some photos:

Here's me leavin' the house on the Vstrom:

And the view from my hotel room where I'm typing this:

Now I need to call someone who invited me to meet for a cold beverage and find out where they are!

I have some video's of the trip to Key West that I hope to edit down into one video-collage. I'm just not sure when I will have time to do it!

Here's one additional picture - me all saddled up and ready to leave the Southernmost point:

June 5th - 1st day of the official UC2CC

EDITED DECEMBER 3RD 2011 Added animated map of today's ride
Map produced using Vasco Da Gama software from Roxio

Well I'm off to a wonderful start...
Mental Note:
The pretty iPhone "Harp" sound for an alarm I use at home (so I don't wake my wife) will NOT wake me up from across the room when the phone is on the table charging - DOH!!

No biggie - just means I ride in more heat
(This would be a bit of an issue today as I got to Florida City, FL - HYDRATE OFTEN!!

Off to pack AND RIDE

Note to XCRIDER - thanks for being my tour-guide last night - had a great dinner & great conversation!

Hope to see you up at D2D or on the road - I'll keep my eyes peeled for the blue Versys with the tiny front tire

Dave

It was great meeting you last night Dave. Hope you get over that little cold soon. Enjoy the ride, let me know if you run across anything I should avoid, and who knows, maybe we'll meet up again at D2D (if I make it in time) or somewhere's in Alaska!
