It is fun...just a different kind of fun than most people want to have on a motorcycle. Go for it...ride safe. Two summers ago I made the run back from LA in 2 1/2 days...I had fun.

I rode the 1150GS and took I-40 to I-81. I wasn't doing a 50CC. I did complete the paperwork for a Saddlesore 1000 and BunBurner 1500 though. What did I take...I was loaded for an extended camping trip. I had just spent 2 weeks heading west on the back roads going out...so I pretty much had everything. Advice...nothing specific that you don't already know...just use your head and think safety first.

That's the route I took when I drove. After the first 24 hours I-40 gets pretty boring. The highlight of my trip was getting hassled by a Barney Fife clone in Tennessee.

Go for it, Scorch. It is not a trip that I would want to do, but I can see how a person WOULD want to do something like it. Like others have said, just do it, but be safe (the adventurous-bad-ass-ride-hard-have-a-blast sort of safe - not the pussy-sit-on-your-couch-and-watch-TV sort of safe). My advice is simply watch out for the stuff that sneaks up on you: hypothermia and fatigue.

It should be a hell of an adventure.

I would love to do this and plan on doing it later this year, but I need to save my vacation days for my Alaska trip in July. 4 weeks, 10-12k miles.

I seriously wish I could go.

I haven't had 4-5 weeks off since before I graduated high school (in 1987). Plus I have a buddy in PA who bought an 1150GSA last summer, and he's going around that time too. (You there, Steve?)

Hmmm ...

I will be on my on my 1150, and Keith on his nine-fiddy. We have alot of planning to do, but want to go at a reasonable pace (not slow but not Scorch) to conserve gas and stay comfortable to eat up miles. Keith and I are not afraid of dirt and plan on doing a good amount of gravel...maybe more. I don't know yet.

You guys got it planned out. When I started planning my 4 week trip, I was counting on buying an adventure bike. So by the time I would get to Utah etc. It would just be tons of gravel type of roads. But I am not quite so sure I want to ride on that much gravel on a speed triple. Last year I got 3 flats and they were all from gravel roads. I dont know why, but for some reason my speed triple attracts flats.

BTW, even with 5 weeks it is hard to see alaska. That is if you plan on seeing the lower states as well. Maps dont do Alaska justice. That place is HUGE. Id love to go to alaska;.

Sounds like acute cabin fever.
