DirtyDog's Solo TAT 2011 - Page 3

^ interesting. I don't think I saw any he-she types, but I did get a siren blip from a cop for standing on the pegs (I can only guess).

Day 1 is in the books. Hell of a ride. Over 650 miles covered today- including the 475 mile approach and 175 mile first leg of the TAT. It was all easy, fast dirt. Until the stretch between Trinidad and La Veta (where I saw numerous wildlife), I was averaging over 60mph moving for the day. Doubt I'll match that pace till the route home.

Speaking of wildlife, here are today's stats:
9 turkeys
27 pronghorn
8 elk
47 mule deer
2 prairie dogs
Shitload of cattle, horses, and some buffalo
Lots of other things mashed into the road.

Currently, I'm camped at Lathrop Lake state park, which wants $27 to camp near a shower. I am sleeping in my own filth, having paid a lesser fee for the primitive sites.

Jason's SpotTracker has had him at the same spot for hours. Is that just how these things work, or could he be having problems?

A little of both, Jay. To put a dot on the map, I need to hit the OK button. to get a satellite fix, the SPOT needs to be stationary for about 20 min.

But I have had some issues...

So this morning when leaving La Veta, a combination of my spirited wrist, high tire pressure, and transitioning from pavement to slick gravel in a turn caused me to biff. I managed to skid a complete 180, using the R mermite as my brakes.

In mid arc, I distinctly recall yelling "Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" before the bike came to a stop. Boogered up the box. I'm fine, just pissed.

Put the boot to the empty mermite to put it back into shape and had to back track to La Veta for repair items- hardware and ratchet straps.

Got it all reassembled and took a slow, nice ride to Salida- where I now sit. As I was gassing the bike, I noticed that the L side mounting tab on the rack has snapped. Must have gotten cracked in the biff and broken some time along the way- more recently, likely.

Now I have to find a welder and should wisely stay here tonight and attempt some passes in the morning.

Look up Hayduke at Fat Tees in Salida. I bet he knows a welder.

I'm sure DD went to the True Value in La Veta. They have a webcam.
