Been watching your progress. I wondered about that area past Animas Forks. Can't wait to see your pictures, wish I was there riding with ya!

And just like that- the game has changed. Had a significant wipeout on an unsanctioned stretch of my TAT reroute around Ophir (the issues regarding the pass is another story for later).

Hit a trifecta of obstacles and went down which disheveled the bike a bit. Once I got it righted and reassembled, I noticed that I put a significant dent in my front rim. I tried to pound on it with a rock. Didn't help.

Now I'm at a shady motel in Durango (rolled in here at 2015 hrs). Gonna shower and think about what to do about this.

There is much more to the story, but I'll save that for later.

I am perfectly fine. It's simply the condition of that rim that worries me. I rode here at <50mph and never really felt a wobble, but it is visible while rolling. Seems reckless to just continue on with the remaining 3500 miles that I have planned.

I'll sleep on it.

Damn dude, sorry for all the bad luck. Sound like it could be worse, your are still riding. I can pull off a front rim from one of the KLRs and send it to you tomorrow. Send me a pm an address and I'll get it shipped in the morning time.

Damn JD. If I had a spare rim I'd send it out to you express mail. This just sucks. Hope you can figure something out one way or another.

It may be ok. I'll decide tomorrow. I sure as hell don't want to stay in Durango long. It was a bitch finding a hotel for less than $100 a night.

I got the handicapped suite at Days End for $64.

I rode to Durango thinking I'd have a lot more facilities at my disposal than in Silverton.

I think with a propane torch, a big c-clamp, and some scrap steel I could bend it a bit back into shape.

Other than the bent rim (oh, and my obliterated mermites :) ), today was a blast.

Marshall pass (i.e. the easy one) turned out to be more work than I thought. There was about 8" of snow. Instead of thinking about it first, I tried to bull through and got stuck. I'm sure it was comical. When I finally considered logic and reason, it was a breeze. Pics will help explain it later.

Saw a marmot today for the first time. Ten bighorn sheep too.

Question

Any advice/opinions on this? Would you continue to ride 3000 miles?

Think it's fixable?

Continue to ride on it for 3K miles --- nope, unless something really big was after me!

Fixable? --- 3 words: Woody's Wheel Works.

Take up an offer from the other inmates who are willing to send you a rim for the trip.

Hey Dirty D,

I'm square between Durango and Silverton (at Purgatory). I've got a decent shop onsite with MIG welder, propane torch and a couch you are welcome to crash on while things get squared away. Pretty far from parts (Durango), but might beat the motel.

Send me a PM or call Nine two 8 six 9 Nine two five 7 four

I stayed there in 2001 for a few weeks and 10 years later it's still in business with good reviews. Give it a try:

Listen to Throttlemeister. You can try to fix yours when you come back.

One more advice:
It's not the Dakar. Slow down, relax and smell the roses.
