Eureka is a good destination to stop for the night. Free camping, electricity (for charging things), restroom (with hot water), bars and restaurants within walking distance from camp.

Here is my sprinkler prevention setup-

And look what I stumbled upon at the convenience store in the cooler next to all the Bud/Busch/Coors swill.

I think that little spot may get a workout this summer.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. I'll be heading your way in.....48 hours.

It is one block east of main street in the heart of town (at Bateman and Buel streets).

Local police confirmed that it is legal.

Sprinklers haven't come on yet, but if they do I'll note the time here.

Had a rough day.

Left Eureka and things were well. At about 1330, I found some mud. Not just any mud- sneaky, slimy mud. The surface was a dry crust. Hidden underneath was slime. I was on a powerline/gasline road and saw mud ahead. It was rutted and puddled. I tapped the brakes and my tires discovered that there was slick mud under the crust. I went down. I'm fine, but the bike is perpendicular to the road. I tried to turn back to find a new route, but I got stuck on the shoulder. This shit was nasty. The bike sunk to the skid plate and I could not extract it.

I hiked an unknown number of miles to a ranch that was within sight. Eventually, I charmed the owners to come pull me out. Now I'm in Battle Mountain, NV evaluating things once again. Got the bike cleaned up at the car wash, but it runs like the filter is clogged. Remedying that will take several hours, so I guess I'm staying here.

The timing of your comment is ironic. Today has really broken my spirit.

I'm sitting here depressed and defeated. Considering retreat. I've noticed more broken parts on the bike- it is disintegrating rapidly. Seems that I'm lucky to get one solid day (like yesterday) before more setbacks. If I were able to go more than 40mph without sputtering (clogged air filter?), I might have pressed onward after cleaning off all the mud here in Battle Mtn. Rather, I have clocked a whopping 140 miles today and am stuck in a shitty casino hotel room.

Now I'm way behind schedule. I hoped to hit the coast by Friday so I can have a decent ride home. That means I need to cover over 800 miles of TAT in 3 days. Not possible at this rate.

I have to be at work on the 24th. If I really pushed it, I could slab home in 3 days (1900 miles) but I wouldn't have fun doing it.

So what do I do? I'll be working on my bike tonight- air filter and maybe oil change.

I'm thinking if I downgrade my trip home from a 5-day sightseeing adventure to a 3-day slab suckfest (though probably through some scenic areas), AND I extend my trip by a day... That will give me until the 20th to finish the TAT and make it to Portland. I think this is doable.

I need flexibility. Its the only way I can keep this fun.
All for now.

Whatever you decide to do, be safe. Maybe also allow for unforseen issues on your slab ride back East.
Looking forward to the pics and stories.
