Eagle River Valley: scenic skiing

I spend a lot of time hiking and skiing in the Eagle River Valley, about 20 miles from my house. There's a secret get-away we stay in, about 10 miles up the valley. When we're lucky, the river is frozen with plenty of snow and we can ski all the way. Other times, the ice is really thin and sketchy, with little or no snow cover. I've had to wade across the river quite a few times and "it hurts" in the winter! Here's a few views going up the valley. This is the Rapids area, which requires careful picking your way through the open holes and thin snow bridges.

One weekend we tried skiing up to Eagle Glacier as the river was frozen fairly well, in most areas. The glacier is in the far background, off to the right around the corner. After skiing through this section, we had to ski across a frozen lake to get to where the river comes straight off of the glacier. I learned to really trust my friend Dwight's route-finding skills on sketchy ice on this trip. I'm thankful I have competent friends to play in the backcountry with.

Luckily we brought our rock skis, as we had to ski through rocks.

The river turned into a narrow, steep gorge with dozens of frozen waterfalls. It was a winter wonderland!

We had to turn around at this point as we needed our ice axs and crampons to safely get any farther up this frozen ice.

Here's a photo of my friend Vicky and I skiing back out. The river ice conditions changed considerably overnight and lots of ice disappeared. It got pretty spooky in areas as the ice was very thin.

This is just ONE of the many fantastic backcountry areas we play in! I LOVE to backcountry ski! I've seen wolverine, lynx, grizzlies and black bears, moose, etc. in this valley. More photos here:

That was taken on the Denali Hwy, around Mile 7, and despite the elevation, it can be pretty warm there. When it is hot here in Glennallen on a summer afternoon, I'll quite often take a ride up to the Denali to cool off, but it's still comfortably warm, and I'll grab my Kevlar mesh gloves to keep my hands from getting too hot.

Nice photo, by the way. Alaska Range mountains in the background.

Where did you take these photos at? It almost looks like the Arctic Valley Road. I want to know where the snow is! Do you have studded tires?

Thumb yes arctic valley road

I took the picture Wednesday evening, the snow started just a little past the hairpin turn with the lookout over Anchorage/ No I didn;t have studs but it would have been much funner with them since the road was paced snow/ice so the goin had to be slow. with these clear days we're having it's beautiful up there.

Too late, it's already been spotted. But we'll assume he meant to put it in the "Fall Colors" thread and accidentally hit the wrong key. Or... he needs a course in map reading.

WOW - I love your photos - especially the sunset reflection and the recliner chair. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit! This state captured my heart when I first moved here almost 30 years ago, obviously back when I was extremely young. I hope you come back and visit some time.

Somebody just whined about the Wisconsin pic. I don't remember who it was, but I'll move it.
