The Great Civil War Battlefield and Dragon Tour

Once again Jay-bro and I embark on an epic motorcycle adventure. We tour Civil War Battlefields and I get to introduce Jay-bro to "the dragon." Every morning begins with, "It's a great day. Nothing to do today except ride motorcyles."

I walk out the door at 0500 and a few hours later I'm eating breakfast at my favorite gas station in Cape Girardeau. A cup of coffee and a Moon Pie. The breakfast of Runners Up.

On our way from Cape Girardeau to Cairo, IL we see lots of evidence of the flooding along the Mississippi River. Sand bags are piled up around houses, boats are docked by mailboxes, and homes have been emptied and cleaned out. I don't think we could have travelled our route a couple of weeks (or days) ago.

We stopped in Mayfield, KY and found the Daughters of the Confederacy cemetery. Colonel Henry Wooldridge was buried here along with others.

Because he was such an animal lover he was buried with a fox, one of his dogs, a deer, and apparently several family members, and possibly a horse. One can only hope his entourage was dead when they were buried with the good Colonel.

After paying our respects to the dead, we journeyed to Murray, KY and Murray State University. Being a bit of an academician (i.e., I can never seem to get out of school) I thought it would be nice to check out the campus and especially their museum.

The Wrather Museum was the first building on the MSU campus and houses a collection of interesting Americana and history.

They have this large bronze statue of Minnie Pearl of country music fame. I was curious to see this rather famous artifact and was quite satisfied and pleased that we had located it. The student-docent-person was quite impressed that we had ridden all the way from St. Louis just to see this statue

Minnie was in a collection of country music memorabilia. I am always curious about museum collections. Jay-bro, however, was curious about other things...

What a hoot! I spent some time in Cape Girardeau back in the '60's and ended up graduating from Murray State...where both of my son's currently attend. Or claim to. Also, when I was in sales and traveled the area, I ate many a lunch sitting in my truck in that cemetery...listening to Radio Reader on NPR.

Your favorite gas station in Cape....is that the one next to the foot of the bridge into Illinois? If you remember the old bridge you might also remember the Southern Cafe at the approach to that bridge. Biscuits and gravy at 0400 after a night at the Purple Crackle and various other dives in East Cape.

When traveling from Paducah to Cape I still take the old route through Cairo...there is still some beauty to be found there but a man has to look for it these days.

Thanks for taking the time....please continue.

Thanks for the post. Yup, my favorite gas station in Cape is the 66 station (I think) on the south side of the highway just on the west side of the bridge. On the east side of the bridge there was a lot of flooding. There's a family type restaurant there next to the strip club that had been sand bagged, but still flooded.

So after we were escorted from the museum we hastily made our way from MSU campus and over the bridges through the Land of Lakes in KY.
