"Polishing"

Put a good long day in the shop yesterday and will be sneaking out for a few hours today, until I am drug away to the in-laws for dinner.

The wire wheel has been getting quite a work out lately and will continue to be used for lots of "polishing" until the beast is ready for Crooked River!

Finesse and SL350's aren't a good fit, probably why we are such a good fit together!

She's up on her new wheels and I'm starting on the carbs, stay tuned for more pics!

Progress

Lots of progress, decided to go ahead and eliminate the speedo drive gear while I was at it;

Rear wheel, same treatment, less photos;

On her wheels;

And on to the carbs;

Getting closer...

Another long but productive day out in the shop working on the SL350, prepping for the VMX in Crooked River next weekend. Adjusted the cam chain, valves, timing, clutch, replaced condensors, tightened steering head bearings, replaced 15 tooth cs sprocket with 14 tooth, adjusted brakes and cleaned tightened and tidied up lots of little things, oh and changed the oil. Then fired it up and rode a little bit. Running a little fat on the low end but revved out cleanly, unlike any time last year. Pulled carbs and changed from 40 pilots to 30's and tried again. Better but not perfect, getting darn close though.

Oh and I found time to cut, grind a drill a couple holes!

Pictures in a day or two.

Each time you post an update I wish I lived closer so I could hang out, watch and get in the way. The I realized it's a good thing I don't live closer so you don't have to kick me out of your shop.

1968 Baja

Last weekend I was watching a documentary about the 1968 Baja1000...which led me to search for what scoot won the race...which led me to this thread. And now I'm all caught up! You do great work Rick. Fun to see all the progress. I have new respect for the 350 Twin. That sound coming out of the straight pipes is just awesome! Keep up the good work and keep racing.

Thanks Brother Mosley! With the carb tuning finally coming around, the sound is amazing. Can't wait to launch this thing off the start line!

Lose your oil fill cap did you? You actually keep a spare?

No, didn't lose it, just showing what it looked like before I ground it into a slightly different shape and drilled a couple of holes for "lightness". Probably saved an ounce or less. My original fill cap ended up on this bike http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...755786&page=26 (3rd picture down on that page), you can see the oil cap, with 3 carefully drilled holes.

All kidding aside, I do believe that steadily reducing all parts and pieces where and when possible will eventually result in the lightest version of this bike possible and still stay within my semi tight budget. There is still plenty of upside for weight reduction; aluminum tank, seat and handlebars, as well as further reductions of components like the right hand cam bushing holder, and I'm thinking that several bushings and spacers can be turned down or subbed with aluminum. Every pound taken off is one less pound to accelerate, decelerate or throw around.

Haha! Got it. Yeah, ounces add up to pounds...
