Salt Spring Island, Beautiful B.C.!!

Hi everyone from Victoria, B.C Canada.

Here is my first attempt at creating a ride report. I have enjoyed reading about so many amazing adventures by so many amazing people that I thought that I should offer this small contribution.

On a beautiful, sunny Saturday that was too nice to stay around the house, Mrs VanIsland Rider and I thought that a day trip around one of our neighboring islands, Salt Spring Island, would be in order. Salt Spring has a population of about 10,000 with a unique blend of artistry, farming, tourism, and vineyards.

From our home in Victoria BC Canada on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the journey starts with a 20 minute ride to catch the BC ferries to Fulford Harbour from Swartz Bay. Being on the water on such a gorgeous day is exactly the perfect beginning to the weekend!

Upon disembarking the ferry, our first stop was on the south eastern tip of Salt Spring for lunch at Ruckle Provincial park. What a wonderful spot for a picnic!! This area was once a private farm and also served as a connection point for marine traffic to Vancouver Island.

Here's one for you TaSK, not exactly espresso in Tuscany but the surroundings make up for this!!:

Time to continue on to Mt Maxwell provincial park, the highest point on Salt Spring.

The road leading up to the summit of mount Maxwell gave me a bit of a workout. The last 7 km of road is basically a 4x4 trail, steep, rocky, and areas of water run off. With my Pirelli street tires I took it very slow and methodical. I must purchase new tires soon, either the Shinko 705's or the TKC 80. Sorry, no pics of the road, concentrating too much on surviving the road!!!

The hard work navigating the road was worth the effort. The following pics are looking down toward our main island as well as some of the other Gulf Islands as well as the San Juan islands.

Waiting for the ferry to arrive and take us home. A good day!!

Arriving back at Swartz Bay, only a few minutes home and a martini!

I hope you enjoyed these few pics of our beautiful corner of this wonderful world.

Very nice. I envy the blue skies. I don't remember when I last saw one and I see you're hoarding them at the coast. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for reading my post everyone, Scott of the Sahara, the round trip price for the ferry was $38.00. One of the nice things about riding a bike is that they let you go to the head of the ferry line traffic and/or squeeze you in when they are finishing loading the cars!!!
