6th July 2013 – New York
Today we had a great ride around New York. It makes such a huge difference when you can just hop on a bike and not having to rely on the public transport. We don’t have the USA maps on the GPS, just some main roads so we didn’t bother taking it. We simply relied on the signs and Sheldon’s sense of direction.

On the way to New York we stopped by the 9/11 memorial in New Jersey, a pretty impressive monument. From that spot, we took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. We bought the tickets for the ferry to the statue, one of them from the ticket office and one from an Indian guy who had bought them online but didn’t need, as his wife hadn’t come on the day. The ferries started operating again just two days earlier after repairs from hurricane Sandy , it was closed before that so it was nice to be able to go out there to experience it. It was a pretty amazing to see it from such a close distance and walk around it. There were a lot of tourists around, a lot of them of Indian origin, maybe it’s the holiday season right now in India and that’s why there were so many of them there. Unfortunately it was impossible to come up the statue, you need to book 3 months in advance to walk inside and get to the first level and 6 months in advance – to be able to get to the second level. So we walked around, listened to a bit of historical facts on the audio guide and then headed back.

It was a pretty hot day and when we got back to the bike we noticed the stand had gone through the tarmac. We hopped on the bike and headed for Manhattan.
Even though it was a Saturday afternoon, the streets of New York were very busy. We rode along the Brooklyn Bridge and then decided to follow one of the tour buses for a while. New York was just like I pictured it with the sky scrappers all around.

We got to the spot where the towers of the World Trade Center used to stand and chatted to a policeman who exactly explained where they stood and then we walked around St Paul’s Chapel’s cemetery with the Bell of Hope situated in the center to commemorate the tragedy of 9/11.
One of the must see places there is Central Park so that was where we headed next. We didn’t want to leave the bike for to long so we walked around for only a little while. We then we rode along 5th Avenue to Times Square which was very busy with people. It seemed so different to the rest of Manhattan, as we didn’t see the billboards and ads anywhere else and I must admit that after Europe it was really refreshing to see buildings without ads and flashy names on their facades. On Times Square I took a picture of Sheldon and some guys dressed as cartoon heroes.

We also wanted to see Wall Street so that was our next stop. On the way, we stopped and had some subway. When I was buying the sambos, Sheldon chatted to a policeman Fabian who told him that Wall Street is closed and that we wouldn’t be able to ride there. So we parked the bike at the entrance of Wall Streets and went for a walk and as expected there was security all along it.
We were riding for a bit longer and then we headed back to the hotel. It was a long and very exciting day.

Wall Street, the good guys or the bad guys depending on where you are sitting at the table I guess or if you are even sitting at the table, most of us arent. We werent allowed down the street but parked right at the top to the dismay of all the security guys. Got this photo of my two babies together then had to move one along.

So off Ewa went and I hung around and chatted to a friendly Egyptian guy, here he is pointing out his flag sticker on my bike.

The New York Stock Exchange the financial hub of the world home of the evil empire probably

Further down Wall Street

Dont know what this building is is it the US treasury building it was the most impressive building in the street so took its picture anyway.

The New York World Trade memorial visitors centre around the corner from the site of the towers.

The Bell of Hope in St Pauls Chapel near the world Trade Centre site.

St Pauls Chapel is the oldest building in constant use in New York City and was used by George washington on his inuguaration day way back when.

This guy has been hanging around here since not long after Australia was offically discovered.

7th July 2013 – Atlantic City
We got up pretty early to catch breakfast. It was my second American breakfast. What surprised me most was that there was only plastic cutlery and crockery available. I’ve never seen that in any other place we’ve stayed.

We decided to pack up and head to Washington before heading north, it was only a few hundred kilometres south but Sheldon wanted to go see some of the things there including the Smithsonian so it is a little detour but something im looking forward to as well. On the way we had decided to stop off in Atlantic City to see the famous boardwalk.

It took us a good while to pack the bike then we hopped on it and started riding. The temperature was still very hot, over 35 degrees celcius. We rode off the highway for a while, passing all the shops, motels and diners along the way. We stopped for a short break and rested for a few minutes in the shade, then we hit the motorway, it was a long hot ride today and Sheldon was complaining about all the traffic lights .

As we got to Atlantic City, Sheldon pulled up next to and chatted to a guy on a motorbike who had stopped on the red light. Then we came across him near the Taj Mahal hotel, stopped and chatted for a while again. He worked in one of the hotels on the waterfront. We wanted to stay in Trump Taj Mahal which wasn’t to expensive in Sheldon’s eyes but there was a long queue to check in so we decided to look for a different place. We came across this much smaller but very charming hotel next to the other big and famous hotel the Tropicana. The receptionist was a guy from South Africa who came to the states 26 years ago. As Sheldon spent some time in South Africa they had some common stuff to talk about. As a result, we got a club discount and saved 20 dollars.

We got to our room and were so exhausted that we fell asleep straight away. We woke up after 9pm and decided to go for a walk along the Boardwalk. We went into one of the casinos, it was huge but I’m pretty sure the ones in Las Vegas are even bigger. Fortunately gambling isn’t really my cup of tea so we left without spending a cent.

We also got to the fun fair situated on the pier. As we walked around we saw a guy with his girlfriend at one of the stalls who was shooting from a long gun. On our way back he was still there trying to win, this time however his girlfriend wasn’t there beside him anymore. She must have got bored and walked off.

Sheldon wanted to go to Hooters to have something to eat. Unfortunately they stopped serving just before we got there so we just headed into the resort next door and got something small to eat and went back to the hotel for the night.

Spent a big portion of the day on the bike in up to 37 degree celcius heat so stopped for a break to try and cool off a little.

Arrived at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City but there was about 50 people checking in as we arrived, I may of waited but not today off to the Days Inn down the road, right on the beach with a nice view so all good.
