Cool2 Piston Junior's Rirst Ride to the Alpine!

The Saturday before Fathers Day was spectacular here in the Alaska Range. A Father-Son ride was in order. Piston Jr. got him a fresh new thumper....

Welcome to team Kawasaki, son! Pass the Monster Energy. His learning curve has thus far kept him down on the valley floor where one never encounters hills bigger than waist high. Time to rectify that. After a Friday shakedown on some hills near home, we load bikes in the van to set out from Healy, AK. Not your average soccer-mom van.

The wee green thumper just barely fits in the minivan with the forks scrunched down. The KDX goes on a hitch carrier. We unload at the powerplant and take off! Little does he know what I have planned. Climbing 1500 feet to the top of Antenna Hill and the ridge that continues beyond.

Dad, put the camera down and get this thing off my leg.

Having only ridden in the woods or on gravel bars Young Piston gains an amazing new perspective.

But we soon encounter the scary scary ridge. If you man up and ride it, the trail continues on for miles and miles!
We turn around..
Head back down..

Piston Jr's descent was a bit more intimidating than the climb. Son if you don't put your feet on the pegs you can't step on the brake! Thank goodness for good solid disc brakes. The hook is set, his appetite whetted for more adventures riding with dad. Can't wait to hear him say 'Bikes are gassed and the chains lubed, c'mon lets gooooo!'

Looks like a nice spot to go check out.

I been searching Antenna Hill for 20 minutes but all I find is Afghanistan war stuff.
