November Off-Road Ride with Skim Ice in NH

I got together with two of my riding buddies for our annual last ride of the season before winter sets in. We are all ex-enduro riders from New England and like our reliable Hondas with the magic button. Tim is the only hold out with his XR250R. We all grew up on Ossa's, Penton's, CT-1 Yamaha's, Husqvarna's, etc.
The day dawned cool and crisp but sunny but there had been some freezing temps so there was ice in the woods.

Our first morning break overlooking Sand Pond

That's Tim on the left and Glenn on the right

Looking west into VT from Lempster Mtn.

Another break at the Newport Reservoir

This is what we were not hoping to find. Icy ledges

Glenn trying to find a way around. Just before this pic was taken he had slid backwards down the ledge while still on the bike. It wasn't pretty.

Lunch break at the Unity Store. The suns angle is low this time of year.

Trying to find a way through the beaver dam.

The skim ice made things interesting.

Tim the ice breaker

Tim negotiating the beaver dam

Glenn picking his line

Glenn going over the dam

The two of them made it

By the time I got to the dam the diagonal log seen in the water had closed off due to the wake. It took me 3 or 4 tries to get over that slippery log all the while not wanting to get 40 degree water in my boots. Down at the end of the water section was frozen ice. I rode up on it but lost my footing and ended up going down on the ice and water with the bike on top of me. Tim and Glenn helped pull the bike up and off we went. Got to love that electric start. Another 15 miles through the woods and slippery leaves and we were back at Tim's house. Another great late fall ride for us old guys.

Trailing NH

There are places to ride in NH like that!! Damn, I gotta find 'em. Being a beantown transplant, I thought there were no open spaces to ride back here. I thought everything was some sort of private 100 acre deal.

Thanks for the report.
