We spent the day in Jasper today. What an absolutely incredible and picturesque landscape! On our way from Hinton, we saw several goats and a couple elk. The elk were definitely males with massive antlers that had between 12-14 points on them. We decided to head to Maligne Lake to do a little hiking to start the morning. Immediately on the trail we saw a female mule deer that was within 10 yards of us. The deer was definitely used to people being around and didn't seem bothered by our presence at all. We made our way through the trail and snapped some great photos of the peaks that made up the serene backdrop for the lake. We also stopped by Medicine Lake and snapped a few shots there before heading off to Maligne Canyon.
As soon as we pulled into Maligne Canyon there was a black bear within 25 yards or so of us. I quickly parked and grabbed the camera catching some good close-up shots as he made his way around the wooded area near the parking lot. The bear was coming a bit too close to the walking paths, so the Rangers ended up getting the bear to move along to a spot where there weren't quite so many people. We were lucky to pull in just at the perfect time! We did a little hiking around the canyon and then made our way to Pyramid and Patricia lakes to catch a few more photos before heading into Jasper for a bite to eat and check out the town. We ate at the Jasper Brewing Company and had an excellent seasonal beer that was light with a touch of honey. The fish and chips were so so, but the great tasting beer brewed right on site after several miles of hiking made it a good choice. Off to Lake Louise & Banff tomorrow.

Nice!!!

Careful with the bears buddy, apparently a grizzly attacked a couple of teenagers on a survivalist training trip near Denali a few days ago.

So Wednesday and Thursday have now come and gone. We took time to visit Lake Louise before checking into our hotel at Banff. Lake Louise is absolutely stunning, almost too perfect. The only issue was it was pouring rain so there we were, standing in the rain with our helmets on like a couple of wet dogs looking out at the water. We decided to grab a bite at the deli inside the Fairview Inn at the Lake. My grandfather asked how much a room was looking out at the water when he did the trip to AK back in '98, he was told it was $1,200/night! Ouch, that is a lot of fuel and tires...no thanks. Who knows how much it is today. The good news was, the coffee was great and it was a dry place to hang out while the rain passed. Once the rain had stopped, we ventured back outside for a few photos and then proceeded down the Bow Valley Parkway towards Banff. The Parkway was an awesome ride with several places to pull off for some great views and photo opportunities. There was very little traffic, so it was a much better road on a bike than the main highway. We checked in late that night and decided we would explore Banff in the morning. We checked out the local museums, walked around the downtown shopping district, and had an elk burger. I'll have to say, that is probably my last elk burger. I really liked the bison when I had it earlier in the trip, but the elk just isn't for me. We left Banff around 3:00 PM to put on around 140 miles to Pincher Creek, AB. The ride to Pincher Creek was great. The country just opened up and all you could see is rolling hills for miles. You would still see the occassional yellow canola fields, an oil jack here and there, or a wind farm, but for the most part it was pretty much open country. We ended the night by sharing a six pack of Olympia beer, which I didn't think was all that great, but my grandfather really enjoyed. He is more of a light beer guy and typically goes for a pilsner while I shoot for the dark or a hefeweizen.
Today we crossed back into the states through Montana and rode the going to the sun road in Glacier Park. Glacier is another one of those places that has just phenomenal beauty. You could stop every mile and take 20 pictures without getting tired of the view. It was interesting to see how much the glaciers have receeded and the current projections have the glaciers fully receeded by 2030. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to see the glaciers as they are today knowing that they will look differently even just 5-10 years from now. Enjoy the pics!

Athabasca glacier at the Columbia Icefield between Banff & Jasper. To get an idea of how large it is, look at the person at the bottom.
