trip

Went to Alaska in 08 from Missouri. You know by now that only by seeing it with your own eyes how truly grand those views are. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

We rode through the black hills of South Dakota one week before the big rally. This was good because the roads were already flooded with Harleys, I must have passed 150 of them. We went through all the little towns and made sure to stop by Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. My grandfather did well negotiating those 10 & 20 mph corners with camber uphill. I don't know how he does it with a bike that big. I had forgotten how nice the scenery was in South Dakota, but I have been spoiled recently with the Canadian Rockies & Alaska. We stayed the night in Rapid City and ended up running into the same guy we saw in Hyder, AK who was riding from Brazil to Alaska. He was a very cool guy and gave me a link to follow his blog. His English wasn't the best but it sure was a hell of a lot better than my Portugese (or lack thereof). We caught a good nights rest and slabbed it +500 miles from Rapid City to MN where we reflected on what a truly remarkable and memorable trip this was and both agreed we would do it all over again tomorrow if we had the opportunity. We said our goodbyes and I was off to my parent's place to spend some time with family and a friend I hadn't seen in awhile. After two days of R&R I was ready to get back on the bike and head south back to GA. I was up at 4:30 and rolling by around 5:30. I basically took interstates back just to get home quickly. I was planning on staying the night somewhere around St. Louis, but then I ended up getting to St. Louis around 2:00 PM and it was pouring rain the entire way through the city. I just kept rolling and before I knew it I was in Nashville with daylight left. I figured at this point it is only 4.5 hours to my place, so I just kept riding and ended up getting home around 12:30 AM. Yep, that is 1,100 miles in 19 hours. My second Iron Butt, but I don't need the certificate to tell me that. I know I pulled it off and that is good enough for me. The ride back was a great opportunity just to ponder all the great memories this trip had created and already has me longing for the next adventure...
